Beware of Potential Hurricane Harvey Phishing Scams – When a tragedy strikes, cyber criminals typically set up fraudulent donation sites, and online scammers look to prey on people who want to help.

This week, scammers have been using Hurricane Harvey-themed messages to trick people into opening phishing emails and links on social media sites. This, in turn, can not only con victims out of money, but lead to stolen login information and devices infected with malware. Please be vigilant about exercising caution in handling any email with subject line, attachments, or hyperlinks related to Hurricane Harvey, even if they appear to originate from a trusted source.  Always be mindful when opening any email attachment or clicking on a link. Think before you click! I have included below some tips from Homeland Security’s National Cyber Awareness System.

If you ever have a question about an email you receive, forward it to abuse@umw.edu or contact the IT Help Desk.

Larry Atkins Award Nominations now Open – The SAC has opened nominations for the 2017 Larry Atkins Award.  S.A.C.’s Larry Atkins Award recognizes UMW employees who are the unsung heroes of our offices.  Employees can be honored by their teammates and co-workers with this award, and they’ll receive $100.

The S.A.C. chooses one wage, one classified, and one administrative professional faculty employee for the award.  Nominees lend a helping hand to their teammates, go above and beyond in each and every task while wearing a smile, and set a positive example for others.

You’ll find more information on the Larry Atkins page on the UMW website.  To nominate a colleague, complete the online nomination form by 5pm Friday, September 15th.  If you have questions, please contact Christy Pack.

Winners will be announced at the Fall Employee Luncheon, Oct. 17.

Annual Coleman & Hurley Award Nominations now Open – Nominations can now be submitted for University Recognition Awards.   We will continue our celebration of excellence with the announcement of this year’s nominees, their champions, and the award recipients at the fall staff luncheon event on Oct. 17.  For more information on the awards, go to http://umweagleeye.wpengine.com/2017/08/14/annual-coleman-hurley-award-nominations/ or contact Terri Arthur (tlockhar@umw.edu).

September Safe Zone Workshops – The Safe Zone program offers workshops that are designed to educate members of the University community about lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ+) issues to increase the safety and inclusion of all campus citizens.  Safe Zone consists of people who will:

  1. Be understanding, supportive, and trustworthy if LGBTQ+ individuals need help, advice or just someone to talk to.
  2. Not tolerate homophobic and heterosexist comments and actions and will address them in an educational and informative manner.
  3. Have received training and can provide information regarding on- or off-campus resources.

Two types of Safe Zone workshops are offered for faculty and staff. The Basic training focuses on terminology, issues related to privilege, increasing awareness and sensitivity, and how to support the LGBTQ+ population on campus. The Advanced training is for faculty and staff who have already completed the Basic training and covers more advanced topics, including bystander intervention.  Enrollment is currently being accepted for a Basic training session for any interested faculty or staff member on Tuesday, Sept. 19, from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.  Advanced training is being offered on Monday, Sept. 18 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Registration is required and space is limited. Please email Laura Wilson at lwilson5@umw.edu to register for the training or if you have questions.

Save The Date!  UMW 1st Annual SAC Bake Off is Monday, Oct. 16. More information coming soon.
