UMW is assisting the City of Fredericksburg’s fire and police departments with training exercises in and around the vicinity of Chandler Hall (near the intersection of College Avenue and Parcell Street) during the periods of May 28-30 and June 2, 2013. On these dates, you may observe fire/police vehicles as well as emergency personnel (including K-9s) conducting training for their regular and specialized units. You should not be alarmed by the presence of these agencies on campus, and you should not contact local emergency phone lines. This will be well-prepared and safely executed training under highly controlled and supervised conditions.

The following message is from Facilities Services:

On Thursday, April 25, starting at 5 a.m., the construction firm will be placing the last of the major Convergence Center concrete pours. To accomplish this they will need to use the Simpson parking lot as a place to stage concrete trucks waiting their turn at the pump truck.

For safety purposes the Simpson Library parking lot will be completely closed during the work to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Pedestrians moving from the north end to the center of campus will be detoured to either College Ave. or through the Pollard and Melchers arcades and around the front of DuPont Hall.

The Library will remain open and accessible via Campus walk entrance (the front door.) As soon as the concrete pour is complete, the parking lot and the pedestrian crosswalk will be re-opened for normal use.

Your cooperation to help us ensure everyone’s safety during this construction effort is greatly appreciated. Please contact Len Shelton at 654-1299 with any questions or concerns.

Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students:

The revised Draft of the University Master Plan is now available for review and comment on the UMW webpage http://president.umw.edu/masterplan/.

In 2011, the UMW Master Plan Steering Committee presented a Draft Campus Master Plan to the University Community for comment and feedback. As many of you will recall, the Plan was the culmination of more than a year’s work conducting studies of buildings, landscape and infrastructure, researching trends in higher education, interviewing stakeholders, and analyzing data. One of the most commonly voiced comments and concerns regarding the Plan had to do with proposals to consider razing several buildings.

In response to those comments, the University asked its nationally known Historic Preservation Department to develop a University-wide, comprehensive Preservation Plan as part of the Master Plan. The Preservation Plan is not complete at this time however an example of the approach being taken has been included (Willard Hall). The entire Preservation Plan is estimated to be completed by September 2013.

The Master Plan is just that – a plan. It is not etched in stone, will likely change in response to varying conditions and demands and most importantly, will be informed by the Preservation Plan. All upgrades, repairs, renovations and construction impacting buildings or landscape features will look to the Preservation Plan before reaching the drawing board. While the Plan contains renderings of several new buildings to replace current ones, if the Preservation Plan indicates the need for a historically correct renovation, that will be strongly considered.

Thank you for your time and interest.

The following message is from the Faculty Athletic Representative:

UMW colleagues,

Thank you for celebrating NCAA’s Division III week with us! Athletics is an important component of life at the University of Mary Washington and we have been pleased to feature comments from student-athletes competing in various sports this week. UMW student-athletes play for the love of the game—they do not receive athletic scholarships.

To end the week, we feature TWO student-athletes.

Andrew Hogan is a senior swimmer from Lutherville, Md., majoring in biology. When asked why he chose to attend UMW and swim for a DIII school, he replied:

The reasons why I chose to come to Mary Washington were simple. The small class size and liberal arts curriculum yield a focused, well-rounded education. The athletic program is both understanding of academic commitment, and competitive on the national level. And, most importantly, the impact of UMW’s community is unforgettable. From the first time I stepped on campus I could feel the strong sense of honor and respect the student body had for one another. It’s what makes us the honorable students that we are. Whether it’s succeeding in the classroom, pushing through a hard practice, or coming together to make an impact on the community, UMW students come together every step of the way. I may forget a class or two, but I will never forget the lessons I learned from my fellow students. I am, and forever will be, an Eagle.

A senior geography major from Charlottesville, Katie Mastropaolo plays lacrosse:

I have always enjoyed competition and participation in team sports has played an important role in my life. I saw Mary Washington as a place where I could get a great education and continue my passion and love for team competition. Playing at the Division III level has taught me a lot about life. You get out only what you put in. Playing lacrosse on a college team is fun but requires dedication and commitment. I work hard to be ready to support my teammates and we all work together toward a common goal. Mary Washington is a unique place, a tight knit community. I often think about what a great fit UMW has been for me. I have been able to participate in many other extracurricular activities and have had a great experience here. I have had the honor of being a volunteer Young Life Leader at a local high school for the past 3 years. I have been a coach and counselor to young lacrosse players at our team camps. I hope to continue coaching and teaching what I have learned at UMW after I graduate.

Please thank Andrew, Katie and all of the student-athletes who are here first and foremost to receive a quality liberal arts-focused education but who also compete for UMW in their chosen sports.

As Ken Tyler, Director of Athletics, says…. IT’S A GREAT DAY TO BE AN EAGLE! And it is!

Thank you for your support of UMW Athletics.

Faculty and staff colleagues,

Thanks to all of you who attended yesterday’s Spring Jubilee at the Battleground Athletic Complex! We appreciate your support of UMW student-athletes and hope you enjoyed the competition(s) you attended and will return to see these teams play again.

One of the players some of you saw yesterday was Seth Jordan, a baseball player majoring in business from Springfield, Va. Seth shares why he plays DIII baseball at Mary Washington:

To be a Division III athlete means to truly be a student-athlete. You don’t get to miss class often for events; you don’t get special treatment from professors because you are a part of a team on campus. Most people don’t even recognize that you play a sport at the university; you are just another student fighting to get the same grades and respect in the classroom as you do on the field, court, or arena you play on. You play for the relationships, the bonds that a small community has to offer. You play for the friendships that will last a lifetime and hopefully even into your professional life as connections to greater opportunities. You know that being famous or recognized on a national media stage for your accomplishments is unlikely, yet the desire is there to show people that they better respect you for your talents, for your hard work, as you choose to be a student-athlete. That is why I choose to play baseball at the University of Mary Washington.

It’s a great day to be an Eagle at the University of Mary Washington!

The following message is from the Faculty Athletic Representative:

Faculty and staff colleagues,

It’s Wednesday of NCAA’s Division III week! Today we hear from UMW Eagle Lindsay Raulston, a women’s tennis player and biology major from Franklin, Va. She plays for the love of the game—DIII student-athletes receive no athletic scholarships.

My days of high school were overwhelmed by tennis, volleyball, baseball, football, and basketball games. Whether playing or watching, sports were, as they continue to be, a huge part of my life. When it came time to choose a college, I knew I was not ready to put down my tennis racquet. Requirements for my search included a nationally ranked tennis program, as well as an academically suitable University with a good biology department. Countless online searchers and college books led me back to the same place, our own University of Mary Washington. Coming from a small high school, the student population here was just right and the academics proved a picture perfect fit as well. Along with the state of the art tennis facility, the coaching staff of Patrick Catullo and Art Canizares made a positive impression on me. These last three years at UMW have been some of the best years of my life. Overall, I could not be any happier with my choice of becoming an Eagle.

As a reminder, this afternoon you are invited to enjoy one of the four competitions being held at the Battleground Athletic Complex from 4:00-6:00 p.m. We are hosting a Spring Jubilee celebrating National NCAA Division III Week. There will be simultaneous contests going on in men’s and women’s lacrosse, baseball, and softball, as well as free food and prizes. We will be sharing information about what it means to compete in Division III and how it personally impacts our student-athletes.

Thanks for supporting the UMW Eagles!

Today, David Heller, a men’s soccer player and business major from Alexandria, Va., shares why he chose Mary Washington and why he plays DIII soccer:

Being a student or an athlete has never been the end game, only building blocks to the much larger picture of life. I chose to be a University of Mary Washington student-athlete because it seemed like the best way to grow and set myself up for life. As an athlete here I’ve gained skills that a classroom could never teach and not only experienced collegiate-level competition, but a collegiate team. As a student I am on track to graduate with a double major and a minor. From this, I plan to utilize the knowledge in a way that will more than pay for itself in post-graduation years. I have found that to effectively manage my current way of life it is critical to have the support of many. From teammates and coaches to advisors and professors, I have always felt like someone has my back, even alumni, to whom I can attribute both of my summer internships. I saw Mary Washington as a place that would provide the best possible foundation for me to find and build myself into who I am to become for the remainder of life; I chose UMW to be successful.

Thank you for supporting David and all of the student-athletes who represent UMW on the courts and fields of play!

The following message is from UMW’s Faculty Athletic Representative:

Faculty and staff colleagues:

April 8-14 has been proclaimed Division III week by the NCAA. At the University of Mary Washington, we are participating by celebrating our student-athletes this week. A week or so ago you received an invitation to the Spring Jubilee on April 10—four competitions are being held that afternoon (men’s and women’s lacrosse, softball, and baseball). We hope to see you there to see a competition or two and enjoy food and prizes.

But we wanted to do more than host a one-day event. Did you know that Division III student-athletes do not receive scholarships? We asked several of our student-athletes to share why they play a DIII sport at the University of Mary Washington. You know these young people—they are in your classes and interact with you in your offices. But they also represent the University of Mary Washington on the fields and courts of play.

Each day this week one of our outstanding student-athletes will share his or her story. Today Carol Dye, an English major and women’s basketball player from Springfield, Virginia, says the following:

The University of Mary Washington (UMW) was an easy choice for me. It felt like a perfect fit from the moment I stepped onto campus for a visit with Coach Deena Applebury. From that time on, no other school could compare to its charm, beauty, academic quality and great women’s basketball team. I knew that the close-knit community of UMW would provide me with an environment to grow as a student, citizen, and athlete. I also realized that a small class size was a good fit for me—I am not a big school person. I wanted to be a “part” of class discussion and have a name, not a number. I also realized that with small classes, professors could develop personal relationships with students and really care about them as individuals. This, of course, was an important component if I played basketball.

And . . . I wanted to play basketball. It didn’t matter to me that it was a DIII school. DIII does not mean that we don’t work as hard. It means that we are more hard working and play for love of the game—not scholarships.

We sweat. We lift. We cry. We cheer. We laugh. We run. We run some more. We succeed. We fail. We try again. We lead, and we lead by example. We love what we do, each and every day. We are DIII athletes at the University of Mary Washington. But more importantly, we are students at the University of Mary Washington.

Thank you, faculty and staff, for supporting the student-athletes who represent UMW! It’s a great day to be an Eagle!

The following message is from the Office of Admissions:

On Friday, April 5, 2013, the University of Mary Washington will host the final Discovery Day of the 2012-2013 academic year. Anticipate welcoming 250 prospects (juniors, seniors, and transfers) and their families to campus for an exploratory.

The Discovery Day schedule includes events from 9 a.m. until about 3 p.m. in the Anderson Center, Lee Hall, Dodd Auditorium, and all around campus for tours. Expect to see increased foot traffic and curious newcomers in the dining facilities. Help them know their presence is a pleasure by anticipating the crowds and responding warmly. Visitor parking has been reserved in the parking deck off of Route 1.

While the Office of Admissions sponsors these events, the entire campus should assume the role of host. Please extend every courtesy and generous hospitality to these visitors. Their impression and decision to attend UMW depends on how they feel while they are here, so thank you for your commitment to perpetuating our brand, our mission, and our sense of the UMW family.

Hello UMW Campus Community:

On Thursday, April 4, 2013, the Office of Academic & Career Services and the Office of Graduate Admissions will be holding a Graduate School Fair for UMW students and the surrounding community at the Anderson Center. The latest registration numbers indicate that over 50 different colleges, universities, and professional schools will be represented.

The fair is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., although we expect college representatives to begin arriving around 10 a.m. for set-up and registration. While the event will be contained to the Anderson Center, you can expect to see increased foot traffic on campus. Our visitors have been instructed to park in the parking garage, but with the amount of people we expect to attend from the community, they will most likely need to seek other parking options throughout campus and on neighboring side streets.

Hopefully this information will allow you to plan accordingly for Thursday. Please feel free to help us in welcoming our visitors to the University of Mary Washington, and we hope you will stop by the Anderson Center to visit our Graduate School Fair.

Sincerely,

The Office of Academic & Career Services

On February 23, 2013, the General Assembly adopted amendments to the budget for the 2013-14 fiscal year. The next step in the process is the Governor’s review and approval or veto. I do not anticipate any line-item vetoes related to higher education.

Overall, the actions of the Governor and the General Assembly have resulted in a solid budget for higher education and for the University of Mary Washington. A couple of key points on the operating budget. First, permanent salary increases have been approved for faculty and staff. Faculty will receive a 3% salary increase effective July 25, 2013, while classified staff and wage employees will receive a 2% increase. In addition, classified employees with five or more years of continuous state service will be eligible for a permanent salary increase equal to $65 for each year of eligible service up to thirty years.

Second, additional general funds totaling $288,000 have been recommended to help fund base operating support costs and other institutional priorities.

Third, general fund support through the Higher Education Equipment Trust Fund (HEETF) remains steady next year at $529,000.

Finally, new state funding of $76,000 for need-based student financial aid for Virginia students has been recommended, bringing total general fund support for this program to $2,572,000.

In the capital budget, funding for maintenance reserve projects is held constant at $563,000. In addition, UMW is authorized to move forward on the renovation projects for Woodard and Mercer Halls, which will house the College of Business and the Department of Psychology, respectively.

For your reference, attached is a side-by-side comparison of actions of the Governor, House, Senate and Conference Committee on the budget.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the General Assembly’s budget actions. I will communicate any additional information on the budget as it becomes available.

All UMW Faculty and Staff,

The IT Department will install a new File & Printer server environment this weekend. This means that what most of you know as "the shared drive" or "the N: or U: drives” will be moved to new server hardware.

There are several important aspects of this project that I want you to be aware of:

– the deadline for making any changes to files on the shared drives is 5:00 PM on Saturday, March 2. All items stored on the shared drives before 5:00 PM on Saturday will be moved to the new server automatically. Any edits made to files or files added to the shared drives after this deadline will be lost.

- The old server will go down at 9:00 AM on Sunday, March 3rd, and the new hardware is expected to be installed and available for your use starting at 7:00 PM Sunday evening. During this time there will be no access to shared drives.

- For most users, the mapping of the new drives on your computer will be automatic, but there may be the need for some users to re-map network drives after the upgrade work is complete. More detailed information on how to do this will be sent later in the week, and Help Desk staff will be standing by next week to assist with any issues.

If you have questions or concerns about this system upgrade, please contact the Help Desk at 540-654-2255, helpdesk@umw.edu, or you may contact me directly.

Thanks for your patience as we perform this work,

Dear UMW Faculty and Staff:

The next five weeks will be an exciting time for students as they contemplate housing and roommate options for the 2013-14 academic year.

· Rising juniors and seniors will decide whether to live on campus for another year or to move off campus into the Fredericksburg community.

· Rising sophomores will decide which residence hall best meets their needs and whether to go through a pre-selection process or go through general housing selection in mid-March.

· All will be deciding with whom to live.

Students have received information regarding the housing selection process and important deadlines. At no time will a student be asked to miss class for the process.

If you encounter students with questions or who are experiencing anxiety regarding their housing options, please direct them to the Office of Residence Life and Commuter Student Services in Marye House, where staff can assist them. For details regarding housing selection options and dates, please visit URL www.umw.edu/housingselection<http://www.umw.edu/housingselection>.

Your support helps to make this process a positive experience for students, and one which enhances their academic experience.

Thank you,

Dear UMW Faculty and Staff,

The Board of Visitors will be holding its regular meeting later this week. At noon on Friday, February 15, Board members will be having lunch in the Faculty-Staff Dining Room at Seacobeck Hall.

During our last meeting in November, Board members enjoyed the opportunity to meet and interact with UMW faculty and staff at lunch. Once again, during the February meeting, the Board members will distribute ourselves at tables throughout the dining room so that we may be as accessible as possible. To assist you in identifying us, we will be wearing our Board of Visitors name badges and there will be identifying placards at the tables.

If you plan to have lunch in Seacobeck on Friday, we look forward to sharing a meal and conversation with you. Thank you for your many efforts to make Mary Washington an outstanding university.

Best regards,

Dear UMW Faculty, Staff, and Students,

I am writing to inform you of the latest developments in the provost search process. The search committee has determined that it will invite three candidates to visit UMW later this month. We are very excited about the high quality of these individuals and look forward to introducing them to the Mary Washington community.

As I indicated previously, a very important part of their UMW visits will be open forums for the candidates to deliver brief presentations and answer questions from faculty, staff, and students. These forums will be held in Dodd Auditorium on the dates and times listed below:

Thursday, February 21, 4:00-5:00 p.m.

Monday, February 25, 3:00-4:00 p.m. (note: the time of this session has been changed from the prior announcement to accommodate faculty departmental meeting schedules)

Tuesday, February 26, 4:00-5:00 p.m.

The names of the candidates and information about them will be released to the UMW community on Tuesday, February 19. A survey will be provided so that you may provide the search committee with feedback following the candidates’ visits.

Thank you for your continued interest in the provost search.

Sincerely,

Dear UMW Faculty, Staff, and Students,

I am once again writing to inform the UMW community of our progress in the provost search. The search committee has completed its first-round interviews. We were fortunate to have an outstanding group of candidates interested in our provost position. At this point, our search consultants from Witt/Kieffer are conducting detailed reference checks on those individuals who are moving forward in the process.

We will be inviting as many as four finalists to UMW for visits during the latter part of February. One important facet of these visits will be open forums in Dodd Auditorium where the candidates will deliver brief presentations and answer questions. Sessions are scheduled from 4:00-5:00 p.m. in Dodd on the following dates:

Thursday, February 21

Friday, February 22

Monday, February 25

Tuesday, February 26

If possible, please reserve these dates and times on your calendar and make plans to attend the open forums. A survey is being prepared so that the search committee may gather your feedback and opinions regarding the candidates.

As we get closer to these dates, we will announce the names of the finalist candidates who will be visiting and will provide access to information about them.

Thank you for your interest in the selection process for the next academic leader for the University of Mary Washington.

Sincerely,

Richard V. Hurley

President

The following notice is from University Police:

The alleged perpetrator of three recent campus break-ins has been apprehended and arrested.

Late last night, a student observed a break-in occurring in Pollard Hall. The student immediately called University Police. Based on the description provided, an alert was sent out to all area jurisdictions. The City of Fredericksburg Police located the suspect and detained him until University Police arrived to identify and arrest him. Subsequently, based on information obtained during the arrest, University Police and State Police executed a search warrant on the suspect’s residence in the City of Fredericksburg.

The accused, Evan Williams, is not a student. University Police charged him with one count of breaking and entering. Upon further investigation, evidence indicated that the same individual was involved in previous recent break-ins at duPont and Virginia halls. Additional charges are pending as the investigation continues.

Key to resolution of these crimes was the quick and decisive action by a student in providing information.

As a reminder to the University community, the Police Communications Center at Brent House is staffed around the clock. Anyone observing suspicious activity or unsafe conditions should call University Police immediately at 540/654-1025; alternately, dial 4444 from any University phone or go to any exterior blue light station and press the call button. Additionally, anonymous tips or information may be reported to University Police via the Silent Witness web link. Also, for the safety of students, the Police Communications Center provides after-hour safety escorts.
