UMW Arbor Day Celebration, April 12

A New Tree-dition
Sunday April 12th at 12:30 p.m. on Brompton Lawn

Join the President’s Council on Sustainability (PCS) for a new Tree-dition Sunday April 12th, at 12:30 p.m. on the Brompton Lawn. UMW faculty, staff and students will observe Arbor Day with a brief ceremony and tree planting followed by a service project with Tree Fredericksburg. Faculty are invited to come and learn about the history of the more than 200-year-old Brompton Oak and plant new trees with Tree Fredericksburg. Meet at Brompton at 12:30 p.m. Transportation will be provided to the service project site following the brief ceremony. This event is part of a larger initiative by the PCS to gain Tree Campus Designation from the Arbor Day Foundation. Residence Life Seeks Faculty-in-Residence for 2015-2016

The Office of Residence Life and Commuter Student Services seeks an energetic, student centered faculty member to serve as the Faculty-in-Residence (FiR) for the 2015-2016 academic year.

The Faculty-in-Residence is an integral component in the vision of creating a residential environment of freedom, responsibility and service for students to learn, grow and lead. The ideal candidate for this position has a strong interest in promoting the whole range of students’ personal, social and academic growth and actively embodies a student-centered, approachable, supportive faculty presence within the residential community.

The Faculty-in-Residence lives in an apartment in the residence hall and seeks to bridge any gaps that may exist between the classroom and residence hall experience by creating a seamless learning environment for residential students. In addition to living in UMW provided housing, the Faculty-in-Residence will interact with students within the residence halls and dining facilities, and during other planned activities to successfully perform the essential job duties of the position.

Application Process:

To be considered for a Faculty-In-Residence position, candidates must submit the following to Bethany Friesner, Associate Director of Residence Life by Friday, April 3.

(1)   A curriculum vitae,

(2)   A letter of interest which details the following topics:

  1. The importance of student/faculty engagement in the residential community,
  2. How you as the Faculty-in-Residence will act as a liaison between the Office of Residence Life and the UMW faculty, and
  3. How the Faculty-in-Residence program will benefit UMW students, the university, and the greater UMW community.

Ensure Attendance at Your Next Event

For the 2015-2016 academic year Residence Life is interested in designating a series of events on campus as Signature Events of the Residential Curriculum. These Signature Events are events co-sponsored by other departments, offices, or organizations on campus and the Office of Residence Life. In order to be designated a Signature Event the event must support one or more of the goals of the Residential Curriculum.  Learn more about the curriculum goals at students.umw.edu/residencelife/learning/

As part of the partnership the Office of Residence Life would work with RAs to encourage students to attend the Signature Event, promote the event on our website and in any publications created for the Residential Curriculum. For these events RAs will be asked to attend along with their residents and then facilitate some form of discussion following the event.

Residence Life is currently accepting proposals for Signature Events. The proposal form requests the following information:

  • Name of event
  • Sponsoring Office, Academic Department, or Organization
  • Contact person name, phone, and email
  • The approximate date of the event
  • The goal of the curriculum that the event best supports
  • Brief description of how the event supports the goal selected.

Director of Residence Life Joins VSSC Planning Committee

Christine “Chris” Porter joins the Virginia Student Services Conference Planning Committee.  VSSC is the premiere student services conference in Virginia! A blending of the annual meetings of the Virginia Association of Student Personnel Administrators (VASPA) and the Virginia Association of College and University Housing Officers (VACUHO), this event is the place to be for those involved in working with students in higher education. The conference offers students and professionals the chance to engage in professional development sessions, networking, and fun activities.

Tony Leger Joins Executive Board of VACUHO

Tony Leger, an Area Coordinator with the Office of Residence Life, joined the Executive Board for the Virginia Association of College and Housing Officers as a member at large. The Virginia Association of College and University Housing Officers (VACUHO) is dedicated to the education and professional development of housing and residence life staff at institutions of higher education in Virginia.

Living Learning Community Open House a Huge Success

The Office of Residence Life would like to thank all who came to the Living Learning Community Open House to support the students involved in this engaging academic experience.

Living Learning Communities at UMW are a collaborative academic and student life initiative where students take at least one class together and live together. The students live on a residence hall floor together and participate in out–of-classroom experiences facilitated by an upper-class Program Assistant who lives with them. The out-of-classroom activities seek to engage faculty whenever possible with the ultimate goal of enriching students’ academic experience.
