Charles Shields Contributes Article to Journal & Presents at Conferences

Charles J. Shields, associate director of the Chappell Great Lives Lecture Series, has contributed an article titled, “If Jesus Did Stand-Up: The Comic Parables of Kurt Vonnegut” to the quarterly journal, Studies in American Humor, for the fall issue.

Also, Shields will present at two conferences in late May: first, at Biographers International Organization (BIO), May 18-21 in Los Angeles, he will appear on a panel, “Ex-Wives, Angry Children, and Other Delicate Relationships,” about working with the relatives of a biographical subject. He will also teach a workshop on literary biography with Tracy Daugherty, author of “Just One Catch: A Biography of Joseph Heller.” Later that week, on May 26, he will appear the panel, “Kurt Vonnegut and Biography” at the American Literature Association conference in San Francisco.

UMW to be Represented at Va. Festival of the Book

A UMW administrative faculty member and two alumni will speak at the 18th annual Virginia Festival of the Book, to be held March 21 through 25 in Charlottesville. Charles J. Shields, associate director of the Chappell Great Lives Lecture Series and Kelly Cherry ’61 and Matt Paxton ’97, will participate in readings, discussion sessions and presentations.

Charles J. Shields will participate, along with two other authors, in the discussion session “Literary Icons – Their Lives, Their Works: Vonnegut, Tolstoy and E.B. White” on Friday, March 23 at 4 p.m. in the University of Virginia (UVa) Bookstore at 400 Emmet Street South. Shields also will give his presentation “And So It Goes” for students at two local high schools on the same day. Shields is the author of the first biography of Kurt Vonnegut, “And So It Goes: Kurt Vonnegut: A Life’’(2011). In addition, he is a co-founder of Biographers International Organization (BIO), an organization that promotes the professional interests of practicing biographers.

Kelly Cherry, Virginia Poet Laureate, will appear in the festival’s opening ceremony on Wednesday, March 21 at noon in the McIntire Room of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library, located at 201 East Market Street. Later that day, Cherry will participate in a poetry reading from her book “Hazard and Prospect: New and Selected Poems” (2007) with other poets at 4 p.m. at UVa Harrison Institute / Small Special Collections on the UVa Central Grounds. Cherry is a recipient of the University of Mary Washington’s Distinguished Alumnus Award, among many others. She is Eudora Welty Professor Emerita of English and Evjue-Bascom Professor Emerita in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Matt Paxton, author of “The Secret Lives of Hoarders” (2011) and featured cleaning expert on A&E’s television show “Hoarders,” will appear in the session “Memoirs: How We Cope,” discussing coping with personal biological and psychological issues. The session will be held Saturday, March 24 at noon at the City Council Chambers on 605 East Main Street.

Jeopardy Question References Charles Shields’ Book

In an episode of the television program “Jeopardy”  that aired on Friday, Feb. 24, the final question referenced Charles J. Shields’ biography “And So It Goes: Kurt Vonnegut, A Life.” Shields is associate director of the Chappell Great Lives Lecture Series.

The question, in the category of literary biographies, was:

“Quoting a famous line of his, a 2011 biography of this man was titled ‘And So It Goes’.”

Charles J. Shields to be Featured on Public Radio Program

Charles J. Shields, associate director of the Chappell Great Lives Lecture Series, will explore how Kurt Vonnegut’s experience as a World War II prisoner of war influenced his later writing during an interview on the With Good Reason public radio program beginning Saturday, January 28.

The interview can be heard on January 28 at 4:30 p.m. on WCVE 88.9 FM and on Sunday, January 29 at 7 p.m. and Monday, January 30 at 12:30 a.m. on WAMU 88.5 FM. The segment, “From Combat to College,” is expected to be online beginning the week of the show at http://withgoodreasonradio.org/2012/01/from-combat-to-college/.

In addition to his interview on With Good Reason, Shields will appear on C-SPAN2‘s BookTV to discuss Kurt Vonnegut as well as the Great Lives lecture series. The segment is expected to air Saturday, January 28 at 10 a.m. and Sunday, January 29 at 3 a.m. and 11:15 p.m.

On Thursday, February 2, Shields will appear on WABC-AM‘s “John Batchelor” show at 9 a.m.

A feature article about Shields’ And So It Goes: Kurt Vonnegut and the subject of his biography appeared in the January/February issue of Humanities, the magazine of the National Endowment of the Humanities, written by David Kippen, former director of the literature program for the National Endowment of the Arts.

Charles J. Shields, associate director of the Chappell Great Lives Lecture Series, will be the keynote speaker at the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read in Jacksonville, Fla. His lecture, “Mockingbird: Portrait of Harper Lee,” will be Saturday, Feb. 4.

He also will present at the Maine Festival of the Book on Saturday, March 31.

Crawley and Shields Interviewed for Radio Program

William Crawley, director of the Chappell Great Lives Lecture Series, and Charles J. Shields, associate director, will be featured on AM 1230 WFVA. The interview, which will air Sunday, Jan. 15 at 8 a.m., will focus on the upcoming season of the lecture series.

Shields talks about his book, And So It Goes: Kurt Vonnegut, A Life, in a segment on the syndicated Colorado public radio program, Page by Page. The segment originally aired on Tuesday, Jan. 10 and is available online at http://www.aspenpublicradio.org/pod_listen.php?row=2126.
