UMW Political Science Professor Featured on With Good Reason

University of Mary Washington Associate Professor of Political Science and International Affairs Emile Lester will be featured on the With Good Reason public radio program, March 28 to April 3.

The show, “Secrecy in the ‘Sunshine Era,’” will include a segment regarding new history textbooks approved by the Board of Education in Texas that a commission of experts have claimed were pushing a specific ideology. Lester was one of three faculty scholars asked by a Texas watchdog agency to review the textbooks.  He discovered that the textbooks were not only misleading, but were false. The show also will feature professors from Virginia Commonwealth University and the College of William and Mary.

An expert in church and state issues, Lester specializes in three key areas: controversies surrounding the teaching of religion in schools, research on tolerance of vulnerable minority groups and liberal and conservative political philosophy.

Lester is the author of Teaching About Religions: A Democratic Approach for Public Schools, which has been featured on the Washington Post’s book review website. His research on religious education has been featured by The New York Times, C-SPAN, USA Today, National Public Radio and Voice of America, in addition to With Good Reason and New York City talk radio.

In his previous teaching position at the College of William and Mary, Lester was named one of the best professors at the college by the 2005 Intercollegiate Studies Institute’s College Guide.

Lester received a bachelor’s degree in government from George Washington University, a master’s degree in political theory from the London School of Economics and a doctorate in government and foreign affairs from the University of Virginia.

UMW History Professor Featured on With Good Reason

University of Mary Washington Professor of History Jeffrey McClurken will be featured on the “With Good Reason” public radio program, December 13-19. The show, “Give War and Peace a Chance,” will consider how history is captured in anticipation of the 150th anniversary of the first publication of Tolstoy’s “War and Peace.” McClurken will discuss how, despite the way that historical movies are often inaccurate, history can be learned from the way the stories are told. The program also will feature commentary from a faculty member at the University of Virginia. “With Good Reason” is a program of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. McClurken, who joined the UMW faculty in 2001, has been instrumental to the university’s digital history efforts and has been on the forefront of incorporating technology in the classroom. Currently the special assistant to the provost for teaching, technology and innovation, McClurken previously served as chairperson of the history and American studies department. McClurken is recipient of a prestigious 2014 Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia, the commonwealth’s highest honor for faculty at Virginia’s public and private colleges and universities. He has presented numerous lectures and presentations across the country on teaching with social media, digital history and 19th-century American social and cultural history. His 2009 book “Take Care of the Living: Reconstructing Confederate Veteran Families in Virginia” examines the long-term consequences of the Civil War for veterans and their families in Southside Virginia. Named to the Princeton Review’s inaugural list of “300 Best Professors,” McClurken received the Mary Washington Young Alumnus Award in 2003 and the J. Christopher Bill Outstanding Faculty Service Award in 2012. A 1994 graduate of Mary Washington, McClurken received a master’s degree and doctorate from Johns Hopkins University.

Psychology Professor to Appear on Radio Program

Mindy Erchull, associate professor of psychology at the University of Mary Washington, will appear on the public radio show “With Good Reason” to discuss her research on the connections between female jealousy and abusive relationships. The show, “A Jealous Kind of Love,” will air beginning Saturday, April 26. Mindy Erchull, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Mary Washington, has received the 2011 Psi Chi Southeastern Regional Faculty Advisor Award for her active involvement as the university’s Psi Chi chapter advisor. During the show, Erchull will suggest that women who see jealousy as a positive thing may be more likely to find themselves in abusive relationships, based on findings from a recent survey. The program also will feature commentary from instructors at several Virginia institutions, including George Mason University and the University of Virginia. Erchull was recently named the 2014 recipient of the Florence L. Denmark Faculty Adviser Award by Psi Chi, the international honor society in psychology. UMW Coach and Psychologist Appear on Radio Program

University of Mary Washington faculty members Corey Hewson, coach of the women’s soccer team and athletics instructor, and Holly Schiffrin, associate professor of psychology, will appear on the public radio program “With Good Reason” beginning Saturday, Jan. 11. Corey Hewson During the show, “Start the Year Off Right,” Hewson will share advice for new runners and those training for a half-marathon, based on his own experience as a runner and his “Training for the Half Marathon” course at UMW. Later in the show, Schiffrin will encourage listeners to cultivate strong relationships with family and friends, rather than focusing on the effects of a less than ideal economy. Schiffrin’s portion of the program originally aired in January 2011. Gary Richards Featured on Radio Show

University of Mary Washington Associate Professor of English Gary Richards will discuss images of the U. S. South in Broadway musicals during an interview scheduled to air on the “With Good Reason” public radio program. The show, “The Gospel Roots of Rock and Roll,” will air beginning Saturday, Feb. 16. During the program, Richards will argue that despite the popularity of musicals like Porgy and Bess and Showboat, musicals with southern themes tend to have a negative view of the region and don’t reflect its diversity today. As part of the program, Longwood University professor Chris Kjorness will discuss the legacy of gospel musician and singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Richards, who serves as chair of the Department of English, Linguistics, and Communication, is an expert on southern literature and culture, American fiction, contemporary drama and sexuality studies. His book Lovers and Beloveds: Sexual Otherness in Southern Fiction, 1936-1961 was named Choice Outstanding Academic Title in 2005. He has written several book chapters, including most recently “Everybody’s Graphic Protest Novel: Stuck Rubber Baby and the Anxieties of Racial Difference” in Comics and the U.S. South. His articles and essays have been published in Journal of American Studies, North Carolina Literary Review and Mississippi Quarterly, among other publications. Richards earned a Ph.D. and an M.A. from Vanderbilt University and a bachelor’s degree from Trinity University (San Antonio). His understanding of various southern cultures draws in part on his years of residence in several major southern cities, including Dallas (1969-1987), San Antonio (1987-1991), Nashville (1991-1997), New Orleans (1997-2008), and now Fredericksburg. “With Good Reason” airs weekly in Fredericksburg on Sundays from 1-2 p.m. on Radio IQ 88.3 Digital. Radio Show Features UMW Chemistry Professor

Leanna Giancarlo, chair and associate professor of chemistry at the University of Mary Washington, will discuss issues surrounding boosting student performance in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, during an interview scheduled to air on the “With Good Reason” public radio program. The program, “STEM Education in America,” will air beginning Saturday, Jan. 26. Giancarlo, one of four experts in the program, will explore the negative stereotypes of scientists in pop culture. The program also will feature Linda Rosen, the chief executive officer of Change the Education, Robert Tai, associate professor in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Special Education at the University of Virginia and Sevan Terzian, associate professor and associate director of graduate studies at the University of Florida’s College of Education. Giancarlo earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania, after receiving a bachelor’s of science in chemistry from the University of Scranton. Giancarlo is a member of the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, the Virginia Academy of Science and the American Chemical Society. Radio Show Features UMW Anthropology Professor

Jason James, associate professor of anthropology at the University of Mary Washington, discusses the cultural struggles that persist in post-Nazi Germany during an interview scheduled to air on the “With Good Reason” public radio program. The show, “After the Berlin Wall Came Down,” will air beginning Saturday, Dec. 1.

The program will focus on James’ argument that “there are still divisions within German culture – between the ‘good’ former West Germans and the ‘bad’ former East Germans – and that both sides struggle with a problematic past that includes Nazi and Fascist associations.”

James is an expert in nationalism, ethnic identity, Germany and East Germany, heritage preservation movements, tourism and collective memory and commemoration of the past.

James earned master’s and doctoral degrees in anthropology from the University of California, San Diego, after receiving a bachelor’s in philosophy and political science from Boston University. His two years of dissertation research in eastern Germany focused on the symbolic and political dimensions of conflicts over urban redevelopment and historic preservation.

Bruce O’Brien to be Featured on Public Radio Program

Bruce O’Brien, professor of history, will discuss the effort to translate and digitize 150 early English law codes, including the Magna Carta, during an interview on the “With Good Reason” public radio program beginning Saturday, Feb. 11.

Charles J. Shields to be Featured on Public Radio Program

Charles J. Shields, associate director of the Chappell Great Lives Lecture Series, will explore how Kurt Vonnegut’s experience as a World War II prisoner of war influenced his later writing during an interview on the With Good Reason public radio program beginning Saturday, January 28.

The interview can be heard on January 28 at 4:30 p.m. on WCVE 88.9 FM and on Sunday, January 29 at 7 p.m. and Monday, January 30 at 12:30 a.m. on WAMU 88.5 FM. The segment, “From Combat to College,” is expected to be online beginning the week of the show at http://withgoodreasonradio.org/2012/01/from-combat-to-college/.
