UMW Hosts Third Annual Athletics Gala

The University of Mary Washington athletic department hosted the 3rd Annual UMW Athletics Gala on May 19, 2016, at the Jepson Alumni Executive Center. Proceeds will help maximize opportunities and support services for Mary Washington student-athletes.

A business administration major and former All-American center fielder for Mary Washington, Wong steadily climbed Major League Baseball’s corporate ladder following graduation and is a perfect example of UMW Athletics’ mission for student-athlete excellence.

Also in attendance for the third annual event was outgoing UMW President Richard Hurley, who was presented with gifts, a cake for his birthday, and was regaled with “Happy Birthday” from the audience.

Live auction items included a luxury suite to this season’s Washington/Dallas football game, trips to San Francisco and Sonoma, the Broadmoor in Colorado, a golf getaway to Pinehurst, and a puppy from the Fredericksburg SPCA. The numerous silent auction items included spirit gear, autographed items, golf trips, and other experiences.

“What a great night to be an Eagle”, said Director of Athletics Ken Tyler. “From celebrating President Hurley’s birthday in one of his last public events before retiring, to Jin Wong’s terrific message about lessons he learned as a UMW student-athlete, the Gala was a huge success. We’re so grateful to our donors and friends for supporting our student-athletes in such a substantial and positive way.”
