UMW’s Cap and Gown chapter of Mortar Board was recently recognized as an outstanding chapter at the 2010 Mortar Board National Conference.
The chapter was one of 77 chapters to receive the Silver Torch Award for meeting management standards while exemplifying the ideas of scholarship, leadership and service.
Adil Quraish, chapter president, accepted the award at the Chicago conference. The UMW chapter was charted in 1959 and currently has 23 members.
Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Mortar Board provides opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community.
Since its founding in 1918, the organization has grown from four founding chapters to 228 chartered collegiate chapters with nearly a quarter of a million initiated members across the nation.
