Wednesday, August 24 marked the first day on-campus for more than 1,200 freshmen and transfer students, the newest members of the Mary Washington family.
This year, UMW welcomes 986 freshmen and 243 transfer students to the Fredericksburg campus. Of the freshmen, 23 percent identified themselves as Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Asian, African-American or multi-racial.
The new students and their families started Orientation with move-in on Wednesday morning, followed by sessions including a welcome by President Richard Hurley and an overview of the services and resources available to students and parents. The day also featured a barbecue on Ball Circle with an unexpected twist – a flash mob to the song “Fly Like an Eagle” by Orientation Leaders, members of the campus community and President Hurley himself. Due to forecasts of extreme weather conditions this weekend, move-in day for returning students has been delayed until Monday, August 29.The start of classes has been delayed until Tuesday, Aug. 30.
