The University of Mary Washington has begun its eighth season of RecycleMania, a friendly recycling competition among U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities. RecycleMania provides a fun and friendly way to engage in waste reduction through recycling. We are not changing the recycling program! RECYLE FOR THE WIN!! Visit sustainability.umw.edu for details and a link to RecycleMania.
In 2015, for the third consecutive year, we ranked first in Virginia, with an 8-week accumulative weight of 37.96 pounds per person. Your participation allowed us to beat notable adversaries including: College of William & Mary, Virginia Military Institute, Old Dominion University, Radford University, James Madison University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The equivalent of more than 200,000 pounds of material was kept out of the landfill, and 182 metric tons of CO2 equivalent was kept out of the atmosphere, which is equal to taking 97 cars off the road or the energy consumption of 48 households.
RECYCLE FOR THE WIN!! Everyone can contribute to our RecycleMania success: 1. Be a role model and inspire others by recycling. 2. Keep an eye out in your building; do you have the recycling bins you need? 3. Request recycling bins at catered events. 4. REDUCE and REUSE.
