The University of Mary Washington Galleries are bringing artistic inspiration to the campus this spring with two exciting exhibitions, each celebrating the collaborative power of art, community and creativity. On view from February 4 to March 23, 2025, these exhibits promise to engage visitors with their unique stories, innovative approaches and the collective spirit of artists from around the globe and close to home.
Ridderhof Martin Gallery: The Double Infinity of Jump!Star: Simmering
In a remarkable American premiere, The Double Infinity of Jump!Star: Simmering takes center stage at the Ridderhof Martin Gallery. This multifaceted public art project, spearheaded by internationally acclaimed artist George Ferrandi, showcases a rich collaboration with her Vienna-based creative team.
At the heart of this exhibition lies a stunning rope woven by participants from around the world during the 2020 Covid-19 lockdown. This symbolic object embodies the spirit of collaboration that defines Jump!Star, Ferrandi’s ongoing initiative to unite communities, scientists and artists in imagining new ways to commemorate the cosmic phenomenon of Earth’s shifting North Star. The installation further immerses visitors through videos, sounds, drawings and a collection of articles created during the project’s virtual sessions.
The exhibit opens with a reception on February 4 from 5-7 p.m., and George Ferrandi will offer an artist’s talk on February 6 at 5 p.m. in Seacobeck Hall 145, with the gallery open for evening visitors afterward. For a deeper dive into the Jump!Star initiative, visit www.jumpstar.love.
duPont Gallery: The Class: If You’re Asking the Question, You Already Know the Answer
Over in the duPont Gallery, The Class: If You’re Asking the Question, You Already Know the Answer highlights the legacy of renowned UMW sculpture professor emerita Carole Garmon. Curated by Garmon alongside Shanna Aberle (UMW Class of 2024), the exhibition celebrates her 25 years of teaching by showcasing the work of 24 artists, most of whom are UMW alumni, who continue to make waves in the contemporary art world.
The opening events on February 4 include a roundtable artist discussion from 5-6 p.m., followed by a reception at 6 p.m. Guests can also enjoy a special performance by artist Wren Tiffany (UMW 2021) at 6:30 p.m. Carole Garmon will return to the gallery on March 13 at 5 p.m. to give an intimate talk about her career and the legacy of her teaching, offering deeper insights into the stories behind the exhibition.

Both exhibitions are free and open to the public. The Ridderhof Martin Gallery and duPont Gallery are open Wednesday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guided tours are available for groups and individuals who wish to learn more about the artworks on display.
