Professor of Communication and Director of the Center for AI and the Liberal Arts Anand Rao delivered the closing keynote at the second annual AI Educator Summit, held at Brightpoint Community College’s Chester, Virginia campus in June. His address, titled “What’s on the Horizon: and What’s Worth Reclaiming,” concluded a full-day gathering of more than 150 teachers, administrators and college faculty from across the region.

Rao delivered the closing keynote at the second annual AI Educator Summit, held at Brightpoint Community College’s Chester, Virginia campus in June.
The summit, organized by the Virginia Society for Technology in Education, and funded by AI Ready RVA, brought together educators to explore how artificial intelligence is reshaping teaching, learning and assessment. Attendees spent the day learning AI tools, rethinking their pedagogical approaches and sharing strategies for navigating AI in the classroom.
Rao’s closing address invited educators to consider not only where AI is headed, but what enduring human values and practices are worth preserving as the technology rapidly evolves — a fitting capstone to a day centered on both innovation and reflection.
“The conversation about AI in education can’t just be about what’s new,” said Rao. “It also has to be about what we don’t want to lose.”
