Powers Publishes Article on Hunting in the Fiction of Quebec Writer Louis Hamelin

Professor of French Scott Powers has published an article in the American Review of Canadian Studies titled “Du cliché antique à l’éthique écologique: la chasse parodiée et renversée dans La Rage de Louis Hamelin.”

The article examines how Québec writer Louis Hamelin uses the motif of hunting in his 1989 novel La Rage to challenge traditional ideas of masculinity, human dominance over nature and the relationship between predator and prey. Drawing on literary theory, psychoanalysis and ecocriticism, Powers argues that the novel transforms hunting from a symbol of mastery into a vehicle for exploring identity, ethical responsibility and ecological awareness, anticipating themes that become central in Hamelin’s later fiction. Read the article in the American Review of Canadian Studies.
