A Reminder About the Campus Environment Standing Committee
Have you noticed a new display, installation or other visual element on campus and wondered how these decisions are made? The Campus Environment Standing Committee was established in 2020 to help ensure that the University of Mary Washington’s physical environment reflects the diversity of our community and the values we ASPIRE to as a University.
The committee includes faculty, staff and student representatives who bring a range of perspectives and expertise with a goal of helping create campus spaces that are welcoming, inclusive, accessible and representative of our community.
A quick reminder for anyone planning a campus display: All permanent and semi-permanent displays must be brought to the Campus Environment Standing Committee for review before installation. There is no prescribed process for determining where a display must be located or who should design it. Rather, once a concept has been developed, the committee reviews the proposed design and supporting materials and provides feedback.
When developing a display concept, consider questions such as:
~How will the display contribute to a welcoming campus environment and encourage equity and diversity?
~How will the display be made accessible to members of our community?
Once you have a concept in mind, simply complete the Display Concept Proposal Form. The committee will review the proposal and provide feedback.
The committee welcomes the opportunity to work with faculty and staff from across the University as we continue to thoughtfully shape the spaces we share.
