UMW Selected for National Student Success Initiative

The University of Mary Washington is one of 35 colleges selected to lead an “Advancing Student Success” initiative this fall 2026, a project extending from the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC) through a competitive grant process. UMW joins a cohort of 10 COPLAC member institutions.
The initiative is led by the Gardner Institute for Excellence in Higher Education with support from the Gates Foundation.
The fall semester project will facilitate an analysis of institutional data to identify key areas of strength, improvements and priorities in conjunction with UMW’s 2026-31 strategic action plan. Participation provides UMW access to a structured, evidence‑based process delivered as a national model from the Gardner Institute and designed to help campus leaders set priorities, strengthen academic pathways, and improve student learning, persistence and completion.
“This opportunity offers a framework to look at our processes and engage with our students, from the first and second years through graduation, expanding on our impressive retention rate to understand more details of the student experience and the many contributions to their success,” said UMW Chief of Staff and Vice President of Strategy Jeffrey McClurken.
