Associate Professor of Environmental Science Tyler Frankel was quoted in a Politico article, also published by MSN, about the environmental impacts of Washington, D.C.’s planned Fourth of July fireworks display during ongoing drought conditions.
Frankel explained that reduced river flow could allow pollutants from the fireworks to linger longer in the Potomac River than under normal conditions. He also described how “tidal slosh” near Theodore Roosevelt Island, a phenomenon in which water flows both upstream and downstream that can trap contaminants in the area.
