Four UMW Speaking Center consultants and Speaking Center Director Esther Yook presented papers at the National Association of Communication Centers conference held at the University of North Carolina Greensboro from April 19 – 21.

Mariah Young and Danielle DeVille received the Undergraduate Research Award for their research “Achieving the Unachievable: The Effectiveness of a Communication Center in the Absence of a Communication Department.” They, along with Tom Pacheco and Russell Michelson, will be presenting at the Undergraduate Research and Creativity Day on Friday, April 26.

The following message is from Facilities Services: 

On Thursday, April 25, starting at 5 a.m., the construction firm will be placing the last of the major Convergence Center concrete pours.  To accomplish this they will need to use the Simpson parking lot as a place to stage concrete trucks waiting their turn at the pump truck. 

For safety purposes the Simpson Library parking lot will be completely closed during the work to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic.  Pedestrians moving from the north end to the center of campus will be detoured to either College Ave. or through the Pollard and Melchers arcades and around the front of DuPont Hall.  

The Library will remain open and accessible via Campus walk entrance (the front door.)  As soon as the concrete pour is complete, the parking lot and the pedestrian crosswalk will be re-opened for normal use.

Join the James Monroe Museum to celebrate the 255th anniversary of Monroe’s birth this Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. in the museum garden (908 Charles Street). We’ll serve cake and punch, accompanied by eighteenth-century music by Doug Marshall and Lauren Smith.

Students majoring in English, linguistics and communication will present their work at the ninth annual William Kemp Symposium, held in Combs Hall on Thursday, April 25 and Friday, April 26. The more than 15 presentations range from “A College Students’ Guide to Social Media” to “Language and Gender” to “Tolkein and Four UMW Critics.”

On Thursday, April 25, the Department of English, Linguistics, and Communication will hold its induction ceremony for Lambda Iota Tau, a national literature honor society. The induction will include the Taddesse Adera Memorial Address by Assistant Professor of English Danny Tweedy entitled “The Importance of Literature.” The induction and lecture will be held in Combs Hall, Room 139 at 5 p.m.

The symposium will conclude on Friday with the department picnic from 4 to 6 p.m. at 1201 William St.
