Scanlon Presents on Women Modernist Poets
Mara Scanlon, professor of English, presented a paper entitled “Charlotte Mew, H.D., and the Magdalen: ‘what she did everyone knows'” at the H.D. and Feminist Poetics Conference in Bethlehem, PA, H.D.’s birthplace.
The paper examined the Magdalen figures in two poems, not only analyzing the representations of their sexual bodies and the visions they enable for male prophets, but also situating the publications in their wartime contexts, in which the crucified Christ becomes a figure for wounded or sacrificial soldiers.
Accompanying Dr. Scanlon to the conference to further their own research on poet Hilda Doolittle, known as H.D., were three senior English majors: Bailey Meeks, Shannon Birch, and Christina Cox.
Dolby Receives Ornithology Award
Andrew Dolby, professor of biological sciences, was awarded the 2015 Eike Award for outstanding service to the Virginia Society of Ornithology (VSO).
Dolby became active with the VSO soon after arriving at Mary Washington. He served on the VSO’s Board of Directors from 2005 to 2008. Dolby then served as vice president from 2009 to 2011, as President from 2011 to 2013, and as Past President from 2013 to the summer of 2015. Dolby began making significant contributions to the VSO in 2004 when he served as Research Committee Chair and organized the Northern Neck Foray. Over the next four years he coordinated four additional forays: Russell and Wise Counties in 2005, Virginia State Park System in 2006, Northern Saw-whet Owls in 2007 and the Riparian Area Breeding Bird Foray in 2008 in conjunction with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. His reports of the first four surveys can be found in “The Raven,” the journal of the VSO, and were presented to both the VSO and the Virginia Academy of Science annual meetings. Dolby also organized and managed two successful VSO Annual Meetings, including one in Fredericksburg in 2009. Dolby currently serves as editor of “The Raven.”
The award is named in honor of James Eike, a member of the VSO from 1933 until his death in 1983. Eike’s long, faithful service, his dedication, and his enthusiasm in promoting the work of the VSO gave him a unique status in the organization. Dolby will be recognized by the presentation of a silver Raven pin.
Crawford, Davies and Griffith Publish Ecological Model in International Journal
Stephen Davies, associate professor of computer science, Alan Griffith, professor of biological science and Michael Crawford from the class of 2014, published their modeling research article, titled “Predicting metapopulation responses of a tidal wetland annual to environmental stochasticity and water dispersal through an individual-based model.”

Davies, Griffith and Crawford’s interdisciplinary project involved constructing a computer replica of the rare plant Sensitive Joint-Vetch in its native habitat – Virginia coastal wetlands. This detailed model was then simulated to make predictions about the plant’s population dynamics in response to various environmental factors.

Dear Members of the University Community,
On behalf of the Presidential Search Advisory Committee and Board of Visitors, I am proud to share the Presidential Leadership Statement that will be used to cultivate the pool of candidates for the next president of Mary Washington.
The feedback from the open forums on campus at the end of August and the online stakeholder input forms, along with input from the committee and Board of Visitors, were used to create the document. Mr. Martin Baker of Baker and Associates LLC did an excellent job in facilitating the conversation at the forums and capturing the voice of our university community throughout the document. I am grateful to each of you who participated in the process.

What was your favorite sport growing up? Briefly describe your favorite memory playing or watching it. Football: Not my favorite memory, but certainly the most vivid was a 1-9 season with only 13 players on the team. We went 8-2 the next year.
Where is your favorite place around town to get a bite to eat? Pueblo’s Tex Mex Grill.
If you could pick one super power to have, what would it be and why? Sonar vision coupled with fish whispering to catch more fish.
Other than the sport you partnered with, what is your next favorite sport and why? Horseshoes – it can be played with one hand for the horseshoe and the other holding a beverage.
If you were a Head Coach and could pick three words to motivate your team and hang in their locker room which words would you choose? No Net Serves!
What does a great leader look like to you? Someone who displays initiative, acts with integrity, and is always unselfish in the pursuit of excellence.
What is a must read for UMW Student-Athletes? Wooden on Leadership (by John Wooden, legendary basketball coach for UCLA).
What is the best advice you have ever heard given to a college graduate? The secret to a long life is “no left turns!”

Weight Watchers Open House, Oct. 1
Don’t miss UMW’s own Weight Watchers@Work Open House from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, in the ITCC, Room 111. Weight Watchers’ representatives will be on hand to show you how you can lose weight without sacrificing your favorite foods.
The Commonwealth of Virginia offers Weight Watchers at special pricing to state employees. Those eligible for the health benefits program also may be reimbursed for half the cost of services, once they have completed program requirements.

Join UMW’s Alzheimer’s Walk Team, Sept. 26
Lindsey Elliot, field hockey coach, and Susan Knick, director of scheduling and events, are spearheading a University-wide Alzheimer’s walk team with the hope that everyone campus-wide will work to combine efforts into a single team effort so that the University really stands out as a major fundraiser and supporter of the fight to end Alzheimer’s. The University’s team name is Eagles Walk United. Our team is posted on the Alz.org website and is available for anyone wishing to donate and/or join the team!
Each year, UMW hosts the annual walk on campus. This year is no exception and we will be the host site on Saturday, Sept. 26. This enables our students/staff/faculty wishing to walk, volunteer time, or simply stop by to enjoy the festivities right on campus without having to find transportation to another site.
Anything you can do to help promote awareness of the walk and our fundraising work is of great appreciation!
