Gary Richards Presents at Conference in D.C.
On Sunday, August 5, Gary Richards, assistant professor of English, presented a paper, “Statues, Stories, and Hominy Grits: The Light in the Piazza, Grey Gardens, and the Complicating of the United States South in the Contemporary American Musical,” at the Association for Theatre in Higher Education Conference in Washington, D.C. The paper was part of a panel entitled “Broadway Musicals as Sites of American Identities and American Histories.”
Richards also was the University of Mary Washington’s chapter delegate to the Forty-Third Triennial Council of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, which met in Palm Beach, Fla., Thursday, August 2 through Saturday, August 4.
Mehdi Aminrazavi Publishes an Article
Professor of Philosophy and Religion Mehdi Aminrazavi’s article chapter “He Who Knows Himself, Knows His Lord: Reflections on Avicenna’s Suspended Man Argument” appears in “The Judeo-Christian-Islamic Heritage: Philosophical and Theological Perspectives.” The book, published by Marquette University Press in June 2012, is edited by Richard C. Taylor and Irfan A. Omar.

Assistant Professor of Music Mark Snyder’s remix of cold winds was released on let the waves carry us by the bell monks on Mine All Mine Records.
let the waves carry us is the culmination of a year-long recording project, throughout 2011, for which bell monks wrote, recorded, and released a 2-track mini-album each month (nearly 2 hours in total). at the end of the year, friends and musicians were invited to remix some of their favorites. the finished album, let the waves carry us, includes 9 of the original 24 songs, with some re-recorded and new additional parts, and is being released along with 12 remixes, most of which are dramatic re-imaginations of the original tune.
Stephen Farnsworth Publishes Research Paper
Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the Center for Leadership and Media Studies, was co-author of a research paper entitled, “Scientific Assessments of Climate Change Information in News and Entertainment Media,” which was published in the August 2012 issue of Science Communication.
Will Mackintosh Presents Paper at Conference
On Friday, July 20, Will Mackintosh, assistant professor of history and American studies, presented a paper entitled “Mechanical Aesthetics: Picturesque Tourism and the Transportation Revolution ” at the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic Conference in Baltimore. This paper was presented as part of a panel about rethinking 19th-century US transportation technology from a cultural and experiential perspective.
Christina Eggenberger Chosen for Leadership Program
Christina Eggenberger, director of service in the Center for Honor, Leadership and Service, has been chosen for the sixth class of the Leadership Fredericksburg program. Eggenberger is one of 30 participants in the Fredericksburg Regional Chamber of Commerce’s nine-month leadership program. This year’s class will begin September 21.
The program, started in 2008, teaches participants about the businesses, issues, government, history, resources and challenges that impact the economic and community dynamics of the Fredericksburg region.

Daniel Preston Presents at Conference in London
Daniel Preston, editor of the Papers of James Monroe, presented a paper entitled “Sectional Reconciliation in the Aftermath of the War of 1812: James Monroe in New England, 1817” at the conference “The War of 1812: Myth and Memory, History and Historiography,” held at the University of London July 12 to 14. Preston also attended conferences this summer in Edinburgh, Scotland and Baltimore, Md.
Jim Groom Talks Tech with Chronicle of Higher Education and Wired.com
Jim Groom, director of the Division of Teaching and Learning Technologies, is featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education’s first e-book “Rebooting the Academy: 12 Tech Innovators Who Are Transforming Campuses.” The Chronicle announced the book in its article “The Chronicle Releases Its First E-Book: ‘Rebooting the Academy’” on Wednesday, July 25.
Groom also is featured in the article “A Domain of One’s Own” on Wired.com.
Chris Kilmartin to be Featured on Public Radio Program
During an interview on the “With Good Reason” public radio program, Chris Kilmartin, professor of psychology, examines how anti-feminine taunts reinforce the fiction that men are sexually indiscriminate. The interview originally aired in July 2011 on public radio stations across Virginia.
The interview will be re-aired beginning Saturday, August 18 on several Virginia public radio stations, as well as stations across the U.S. The segment, “Real Men,” also is available online at http://withgoodreasonradio.org/2012/08/real-men-2/.
