Alan Griffith, associate professor of biology, has accepted Provost Jay Harper’s request to chair the Quality Enhancement Plan project team. “Alan brings a wealth of experiences to this task and I have every confidence that he will do a wonderful job,” said Harper. Eighteen faculty and staff members have expressed an interest in working on the QEP project team, and team members will be announced soon. “I will strive to assemble a group that affords a diversity of perspectives, viewpoints, and experiences with and about the first year experience,” said Harper. Faculty and staff who have an interest in working on the QEP project should contact the Provost.

Donna Raab, senior director of advancement communications at UMW will be recognized by the National Federation of Press Women for her work on UMW Advancement reports at the NFPW annual conference, September 8-10 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. NFPW is a nationwide organization of professional journalists and communicators.

UMW professor emeritus Bulent Atalay published an op-ed in the June 10 issue of the Free Lance-Star titled “The Muslim world needs another Ataturk.”

Virginia Mackintosh, assistant professor of psychology, had an op-ed
“Beyond Growing Pains” published in the June 12 edition of  The Free Lance Star.

Janet Cropp, assistant dean of Advising Services,  has been invited to join a State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) advisory committee  that  will assess opportunities and explore models for promoting baccalaureate degree attainment among Virginia’s working age adult population.   SCHEV has commissioned this study through the Virginia Tech Office of Economic Development.  Cropp’s invitation was issued by Carmen Johansen, senior associate for  Academic Affairs and Planning for the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.  Cropp, who has done significant work advising BPS students,  also is president of the  Association of Virginia Individualized Studies Administrators (AVISA).
