Jeff McClurken, associate professor of history, presented his paper “Teaching with Social Media” during the Digital Humanities workshop at the 126th Annual Meeting of the American Historical Association in Chicago.
He also ran a pre-conference workshop, “So, You Want to Teach a Digital History Class?” at the AHA.
Jeff McClurken, associate professor of history, will moderate the Years of Anguish Sesquicentennial speakers’ forum on Saturday, Nov. 12. The forum, held in George Washington Hall’s Dodd Auditorium from 1 to 5 p.m., will feature acclaimed historians Gary Gallagher and Peter Carmichael.
The Fredericksburg Area Museum and Cultural Center, the National Park Service and the University of Mary Washington are sponsoring the program, which is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow the presentations in the Dodd Auditorium Foyer.
Gary Gallagher, the John L. Nau III Professor in the History of the American Civil War at the University of Virginia, will present the lecture, “Devoted to Union.”
Peter Carmichael, director of the Civil War Institute and Robert C. Fluhrer Professor of Civil War Studies at Gettysburg College, will explore how the generation of 1861 understood the war and why they fought.

The rededication of newly renovated Monroe Hall will take place on Friday, September 16 in a 4 p.m. ceremony. The ceremony will include remarks by President Richard V. Hurley, William B. Crawley, Jr., distinguished professor emeritus of history and American studies, Jeffrey McClurken, chair of the department of history and American studies and Daniel Steen, university rector, followed by a ribbon cutting. Members of the UMW community are invited to attend.
Monroe Hall, UMW’s first academic building and the longtime home of the Department of History and American Studies, recognizes the contributions of William B. Crawley, Jr. through a seminar room in his name. The seminar room will be used for small classes, including first-year seminars and methods courses. Notably, the seminar room is home to four tables from when Trinkle Hall functioned as the library.
In addition to the Crawley Seminar Room, Monroe Hall holds lecture halls, computer lab classrooms, labs, flexible learning space and two other seminar rooms. The building houses the departments of geography, history and American studies, political science and international affairs, sociology and anthropology and economics.
Nabil Al-Tikriti, associate professor of history, is currently serving as a short term observer (STO) for the May 8 municipal elections in Durres, Albania. For these elections, he is affiliated with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and will be in the country from 5-12 May, 2011.
Nabil Al-Tikriti, associate professor of history, gave a keynote address, “The State of Middle East Studies in the American Academy,” at the 5th Joint International Workshop held in Tokyo, Japan February 12-13. Al-Tikrit also served as a discussant for the graduate student workshop “Science, Institutions, and Identity in the Muslim Societies” organized jointly by Kyoto University and the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.
Jeffrey McClurken, associate professor and chair of history and American studies, co-organized, with the Fredericksburg Area Museum and the National Park Service, and moderated a speakers’ forum on secession—the local kickoff event of the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Nabil Al-Tikriti, associate professor of history, made presentations entitled “Shifting Borders and State Prerogatives: Iraqi Provincial Border Changes from the Ottoman Era to Today” at the July WOCMES conference in Barcelona, “Messiah Lovers, Sola Scriptura, and the Early Evolution of both an Ottoman Islam and Protestantism” at the October WHA conference in Istanbul, and “Iraqi Provincial Border Changes from the Ottoman Era to Today” at the November JIIA Workshop on the Developing Environment of Middle East Peace in Tokyo. He also submitted book reviews of Adeed Dawisha’s Iraq: A Political History from Independence to Occupation for the International Journal of Middle Eastern Studies, and Orit Bashkin’s The Other Iraq: Pluralism and Culture in Hashemite Iraq for the quarterly journal History: Reviews of New Books.
