New Estate Gift Benefits UMW Theater Students

On June 30, 2011, UMW received a gift of more than $90,000 from the estate of John Allison Gow of Houston, Tex. Mr. Gow worked in theater for more than 30 years, was a well-respected member of the Houston theatrical community, and served as a mentor to many aspiring students. During his lifetime, Mr. Gow was a regular contributor to the UMW Keith Belli Memorial Scholarship originally established in 1997 as tribute to Professor Belli’s five years of service to Mary Washington. The Belli scholarship is awarded annually to outstanding theater students.   This gift announcement is from the Office of Advancement and University Relations.

This generous gift from the estate of one of Keith’s closest friends and professional colleagues ensures that generations of students will benefit from his extraordinary legacy at Mary Washington. A beloved member of our faculty for six years, Keith was a gifted scenic and costume designer who designed for the renowned Alley Theatre and Stages Repertory Theatre, as well as regionally for the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. The Department of Theatre & Dance is grateful that John chose to honor Keith’s memory with this bequest.
