Death of Faculty Member

It is with deep sorrow that we notify the university community of the passing of Cheryl Hawkinson-Melkun, Assistant Professor, College of Business, a university employee of 16 years. She is best known for many years of service with the Stafford Campus writing center, prior to assuming her most recent teaching role.

Cheryl was dedicated to her students. One of her students once wrote, “Her enthusiasm and interest in the topic were infectious.”  Her department chair, Raul Chavez, commented, “Her legacy as a dear friend, colleague, and former Director of the Writing Center will live on forever in our memory.”

Our thoughts and prayers are with Cheryl’s family at this time. As listed in the obituary in the Free Lance-Star, the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 22, at Mullins and Thompson Funeral Service in Fredericksburg. A service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at Fredericksburg United Methodist Church. Burial will be private.

What a catastrophic loss for the UMW community. Cheryl was one of the most qualified, passionate, and impactful professors in the business program. Her joy of teaching made her classes wonderfully challenging and engaging. She loved to talk about her love of swimming and her family. My thoughts go out to her family and friends.
