UMW & Germanna Partner on Two New Programs

Germanna Community College students will be able to take classes at the University of Mary Washington as part of new co-enrollment and direct transfer agreements between the two institutions. “We are delighted to partner with Germanna to make these programs available to qualified community college students,” said President Hurley.

The co-enrollment agreement, the first of its kind that UMW has developed with a community college partner, allows Germanna students to take a limited number of courses at UMW while remaining enrolled at the community college.

“This historic and innovative agreement takes the ongoing partnership between the University of Mary Washington and Germanna Community College to a new level,” said GCC President Sam. “Since President Hurley began his tenure, he and I have had regular and productive meetings on how, together, we can better serve our students, communities and the Commonwealth. This agreement is one fruit of the trusting relationship he and I have developed.”

Under the co-enrollment agreement, an eligible student may take up to five courses at UMW that will transfer back to the student’s associate degree program at Germanna. Co-enrolled students will be admitted to UMW after successfully earning associate degrees and meeting a minimum grade-point average (GPA) requirement. UMW will accept co-enrolled students’ transfer credit, up to 63 credit hours.

The direct transfer agreement allows eligible Germanna students to transfer to UMW’s bachelor of liberal studies (BLS) degree program. The BLS degree is designed for adults who want to major in a traditional arts and sciences discipline and who have either graduated from high school six or more years ago, are veterans or active-duty members of the U.S. armed services, are married, have legal dependents other than a spouse or are financially self-supporting.

Under the agreement, Germanna students who meet the eligibility requirements for the BLS program and have earned an associate degree with a minimum GPA are guaranteed admission to UMW’s BLS program. UMW will accept the transfer students’ credit, up to 63 credit hours.

UMW already participates in a guaranteed admission agreement with Virginia’s two-year colleges, including 19 branches of the Virginia Community College System and Richard Bland College. Students who graduate with an associate degree in arts, sciences, or arts and sciences and meet a minimum GPA requirement may obtain guaranteed admission to the university
