Call for Participation: “Civic Engagement: Recasting and Drawing Upon a Wider Net” Seminar Grant

Dear UMW Faculty, Students, Administration, and Staff:

The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AACU) and the Bringing Theory to Practice Project has awarded University of Mary Washington a 2012-2014 Civic Engagement seminar grant. The purpose of our seminar grant is to bring together UMW members of the UMW campus community along with local community members to explore and strengthen the role of civic engagement within UMW and within the broader community.  We would like you to consider participating!

Our grant, “Civic Engagement: Recasting and Drawing Upon a Wider Net” and will be directed by Dr. Mary Kayler (Director, Center for Teaching Excellence and Innovation), Dr. John P. Broome (Assistant Professor, College of Education) and Ms. Christina Eggenberger (Director of Service, Center for Honor, Leadership, and Service).

Participation in our Civic Engagement Seminar would include:

* Completing a short reading on civic engagement in higher education (approximately 20 pages).

* Attending two Civic Engagement Seminar Grant Meetings (listed below)

* Be an active participant in discussions about civic engagement at the University.

After the seminars, interested participants who wish to continue with the initiative will be entirely optional.

1) Civic Engagement Seminar Grant Meeting for UMW Faculty, Administration and Staff.

Time: 12:15 to 1:30 p.m.

Light refreshments will be served.
