Dave Toth, assistant professor of computer science, and four students traveled to the XSEDE 13 conference which was held in San Diego July 22-25.  “XSEDE, the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment, is a National Science Foundation-supported project that brings together supercomputers, data collections, and computational tools and services to support science and engineering research and education. The annual XSEDE conference focuses on the science, education, outreach, software, and technology used by the XSEDE and other related communities worldwide.”

Toth presented drug discovery research done with his colleagues, assistant professors Jimmy Franco (chemistry) and Charlotte Berkes (biology) at Merrimack College, and published the paper “Attacking HIV, Tuberculosis and Histoplasmosis with XSEDE Resources.”  Toth also participated in the panel “Development of Undergraduate and Graduate Programs in Computational Science.”

UMW students Alex Gilley, Zach Goodwyn, Jerome Mueller, and Russell Ruud presented posters on work done with Toth during the spring semester and through UMW’s Summer Science Institute.  The students also took second place in the programming competition held at the conference, competing against bigger teams.  Travel for the students was supported by UMW and a generous contribution from the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT).
