As of Tuesday, Aug. 4, all employees now use UMW’s central Microsoft sign-in process to access Canvas — the same authentication system used for Microsoft 365, Banner, and other University systems.
What’s changed:
- Username: Sign in with your full UMW email address (for example, jsmith@umw.edu) instead of your NetID.
- Password: Continue using your NetID password.
- Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Canvas now requires verification through the Microsoft Authenticator app for all logins, whether on or off campus, including classroom computers.
If you haven’t already, install and configure the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device before your next Canvas login. Current sessions may have ended when the new authentication process took effect, so you may be prompted to sign in again on all devices, including the Canvas mobile app.
This change moves Canvas to Microsoft Entra ID, providing a consistent sign-in experience across University systems while strengthening the security of course and student data.
