On Friday, Nov. 6, Campus Dining and the UMW Athletic Department will launch Sodexo’s annual “Stop Hunger” food drive on our campus. This is the 10th year that Campus Dining and our UMW athletes have worked together to coordinate a campus and community food drive to benefit local food charities. Last year’s drive resulted in nearly 5,000 pounds of food being donated to the Fredericksbug Regional Food Bank. This year, with the support of the our UMW community, the YMCA, radio station 99.3 The Vibe and several local public schools and churches, we hope to collect a whopping 25,000 pounds of food! We’ve set this goal in order to make a real impact on food insecurity in our area.
Our athletes are also participating in a conference-wide food drive competition and hope to win top honors for UMW as the school collecting the most food for their community. The athletes will be setting up collection tables at local food stores and promoting student donations here on campus. There will be many opportunities for students, faculty and staff to donate non-perishable foods to the “Stop Hunger” food drive.
* Nov. 6: Between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., donations may be dropped off at the curb on College Avenue in front of Seacobeck Hall. Radio station 99.3 The Vibe will also be on hand to help promote donations.
*Nov. 6-13: The UMW Bookstore will be giving discounts to customers who make food donations in the bookstore.
*Nov. 6-13: Collection bins will be available in all Campus Dining locations.
There will also be several other “Stop Hunger” food drive events and Campus Dining will provide boxes, bins, signs and flyers to any UMW office or group wishing to support the food drive. For more information contact Heather Hosey at Heather.Hosey@Sodexo.com or call 540-654-5982.
