Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 5, at 7 p.m., for a screening in the University Center’s Chandler Ballroom of a documentary called The Burden, followed by a panel discussion. The 40-minute documentary addresses the burden that fossil fuel dependence places on the military and highlights efforts by the armed forces to move to renewable energy for field operations. The film has garnered awards and accolades, including Best of Festival at the Wild & Scenic Film Festival and Best Documentary at the Long Beach International Film Festival. The screening is sponsored by the UMW President’s Office, Marstel-Day, and the Rappahannock Group of The Sierra Club.
For a discussion of the film, UMW is honored to host a distinguished panel of military, government, and civilian experts in the field of operational energy. UMW Political Science Professor Jason Davidson will moderate the panel, which will include:
General Anthony Zinni, former Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Central Command
Rear Admiral Douglas Morton, Chief of Naval Operations, Energy and Environmental Readiness Division
Roberto Guerrero, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Air Force, Operational Energy
Rebecca Rubin, President and CEO of Marstel-Day, an environmental consulting firm with extensive military expertise.
The evening promises to be enlightening and thought-provoking. There will be no charge, but registration is encouraged at this EventBrite link to help gauge attendance. Seating in the ballroom is limited to 450 people, so please plan to arrive a little early.
