The UMW Board of Visitors recognized the continued generosity of the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications, Inc. (SWIFT) on Friday, April 15, 2016, by naming the SWIFT Collaboration Room inside the Hurley Convergence Center.
This naming was announced during the official ceremony to dedicate the Hurley Convergence Center and to unveil the newest presidential portrait. SWIFT, known as the world’s leading provider of secure financial messaging services, is headquartered in Belgium and has operations centers in Virginia. The organization first established a scholarship in 1990 for UMW students majoring in computer science, and it frequently hosts UMW student interns and employs Mary Washington alumni.
SWIFT made a recent gift to the Mary Washington First Campaign to support the Teaching, Learning, and Technology Endowment for programs and technology within the Hurley Convergence Center. Funds will be used to enhance technological tools and hardware needed to teach new practices and uses, both in and out of the classroom. The endowment also will support existing programs hosted in the Hurley Convergence Center.
“This is the first of many such named spaces in the Hurley Convergence Center,” said Vice President for Advancement and University Relations Torre Meringolo. “In fact, several of our loyal supporters have already pledged or paid more than $350,000 through the Mary Washington First Campaign for reserved spaces that they wish to dedicate in honor of President Hurley. In addition, 436 donors have given nearly $350,000 to a variety of designations in honor of President Hurley.”
Board of Visitors Rector Holly Tace Cuellar ’89 presented the signed BOV Resolution to SWIFT’s Senior HR Specialist Chris Marquardt. The SWIFT Collaboration Room is located on the second floor of the Hurley Convergence Center.
The Mary Washington First Campaign began July 1, 2011, and will end on June 30, 2016. All gifts count toward the $50 million goal. For more information, visit http://umw.edu/marywashingtonfirst or call 540-654-2059.
