The Office of Alumni Relations would like to invite you to join us for the most recent installment of the Mary Talks Series. Mary Talks are lectures and insightful discussions with Mary Washington’s outstanding faculty and administrators.
Please join us on Thursday, Nov. 17, for the next installment in the popular new Mary Talks series. This Mary Talk will feature Kevin Bartram, UMW Philharmonic Orchestra director, discussing his recent research work, “Unearthing America’s Musical Treasures.” Please stay for the free dessert reception, which will be held immediately after the Mary Talk.
Working with a national research team in tandem with the Music Division of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., Bartram recently kicked off a project to find American classical masterworks that have been long forgotten. The project involves a research team from around the country—including three current UMW students—conducting both online and onsite research into orchestral works that are unknown to the public.
The Library of Congress’ Music Division has the largest music library in the world. Of these holdings, 10 million are of American music, with 75 percent uncatalogued or digitized. The research team will comb through the extensive archives at the Library of Congress with the goal of rediscovering these American symphonic music hidden gems.
While this event is free, we do have limited seating and registration for the event is required. You can register HERE.
