Admissions “Access UMW” Open House Nov. 12

On Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016, the University of Mary Washington Admissions Office will host “Access UMW,” a diversity focused Open House. Approximately 140 prospective students (typically high school seniors, juniors and sophomores, as well as transfers) and their families will visit and tour campus between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.  The estimated guest count is 420 visitors.

Access UMW will include many elements of our traditional Open House programs: an academic and student showcase, tours of campus, and an overview of the admissions and financial aid processes. It will also feature some unique aspects such as a session on Diversity and Inclusion in Action at Mary Wash, access to the James Farmer Multicultural Center and a showcase of culturally based student clubs and organizations.

A sample agenda is posted here. Visitor parking has been reserved in the George Washington parking lot, the parking deck off of Route 1, and on Double Drive. Primary event locations are the University Center, Dodd Auditorium, Lee Hall, Woodard Hall and campus/residence hall tours in Mason. Expect to see increased foot traffic on campus and curious newcomers at the Top of the University Center (fourth floor), especially between noon and 2 p.m.

While the Office of Admissions sponsors these events, the entire campus assumes the role of host. Our visitors frequently comment on how “friendly, helpful and engaging” our UMW community is! One visitor recently shared the following Open House comments:

“…From a parent perspective, I wanted to thank you and all the admission staff and professors/teaching staff who worked during your Open House.  I was incredibly impressed with the event and the amount of work that must have gone into the preparation and production of the event.  “Wow” is all I can say. The quality of department presentations, tours, their passion for UMW, lunch, and information we gathered from all the UMW participants at the open house was SUPERB! I know that kind of thing doesn’t happen by accident – it takes time and lots of effort on the part of your larger college community…”

We encourage you to show your support and tweet to @UMWAdmissions and/or post to Instagram and tag @UMWAdmissions. We would like to see #UMWOpenHouse trending throughout the day. If you’d like to be involved in Open Houses or have ideas, please contact Admissions at 540-654-2000 or email admit@umw.edu.

Thank you for your partnership in showcasing all that is great about UMW!
