Veterans Day Message from President Paino

Dear UMW Community,

I invite you to join me in pausing to commemorate Veterans Day on Friday, November 11. This official public observance allows us to celebrate and honor all of America’s veterans for their patriotism, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

911%20commemorationThe UMW Association of Student Veterans (ASV) will be holding important recognition events across campus on Veterans Day. Everyone is invited and encouraged to participate in these activities.

At 8:00 a.m., there will be an ROTC flag raising ceremony on Jefferson Square, adjacent to Double Drive.  From 12:45-1:15 p.m., ASV will hold a “22 Pushup Challenge” and baked goods sale in the front of the University Center.  The pushup challenge is part of a nationwide campaign to bring awareness of veteran suicide prevention efforts, as well as to honor military service members and veterans. I will personally participate in the challenge at 12:45 p.m., so I encourage you to come out and see if your president can actually do 22 pushups!

Here in our Mary Washington community, we have many students, faculty, staff, and alumni who are veterans or whose family members and loved ones are active or former military. Please join me in thanking all of these dedicated and brave men and women for their service.

Troy D. Paino

President
