Landscape and Grounds Work Taking Place in January

Dear UMW Community,

Our grounds crew has already been hard at work this spring semester cleaning up overgrown areas of campus. You’ve probably seen or heard this work in the ravine near Seacobeck Hall and around Jepson Science Center. Crews will be in these areas for a few more days and then clean up areas around Arrington and Goolrick halls. We appreciate you navigating around these areas in the month of January and giving the grounds crews space to complete the work.

The spring cleaning includes removing trees that were impacted during the storms of January 2022 and removing invasive species such as poison ivy, English ivy, common greenbrier and wild grape, which can form large thickets and choke-out much of the existing vegetation. Our pollinator gardens and “no-mow” zones (which are actually maintained once or twice each year, versus every other week) are being protected during this process, though you may see work in these areas to make sure they continue to flourish. With this maintenance, our campus can continue to enjoy our beautiful green spaces this spring.
