The following is a message from the Center for Community Engagement, Student Affairs, and Human Resources:
UMW Students, Staff, and Faculty,
Election Day is coming up on Tuesday, Nov. 5, with early voting already available, and we want to remind you about the resources and opportunities that day and throughout next week.
If you haven’t already voted, Tuesday Nov. 5th is the last chance to participate in this election.
On Election Day, polls are open from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Visit the UMW Votes website to learn more about how to be #VoteReady, and learn more about the fifth annual Day on Democracy, a tradition started at UMW and now recognized nationwide by universities and colleges.
- Rides to the Polls: UMW Votes will be providing free rides to the polls on the Fredericksburg Trolley. Rides will leave from the Bell Tower. The Fredericksburg Trolley will be on campus from 10:00am – 7:00pm to provide rides to the local polling place at Dorothy Hart Community Center (thanks to the Fund for Mary Washington Impact Grant for supporting this).
- Info: You can find information about what is on the ballot in Fredericksburg and the location of your polling place or stop by the UMW Votes info table at the Bell Tower on Campus Walk between 10:00am – 7:00pm on Election Day. Nonpartisan sample ballots for Fredericksburg and free donuts will be provided at the info tables.
- Campus Address: If you are registered to vote at your campus address, remember that you will be asked to state your residence address, and that address for on-campus students is 1301 College Ave., Fredericksburg VA 22401.
- Day on Democracy: Day on Democracy will be sponsoring several activities on Election Day, including tabling on Campus Walk with free tote bags.
For Day on Democracy, lecture classes may be cancelled on Tuesday, Nov. 5, to encourage members of our community to participate in our democratic system. Check with your instructor for more information for your specific classes. Note that classes or labs that meet once a week continue as scheduled and as communicated by instructors.
We also want to share reminders about resources available throughout this election season and as part of your campus experience.
The Employee Assistance Program, available year-round for employees via the Human Resources website, shares insights, webinars and practical wisdom for election stress via the Anthem website. These tools are available to all Commonwealth of Virginia employees, regardless of insurance type. The EAP provides additional programs to state employees and dependents through our health plans.
Students can access on-demand, free mental health services 24 hours a day, seven days a week, via TimelyCare, an online service accessed via a web browser or app. Resources in support of mental health and civic engagement are available on the TimelyCare website, and more information about the service at UMW is provided through the Talley Center for Counseling Services.
- Go to timelycare.com/umw or download the TimelyCare app to access care.
- Download via Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
TimelyCare uses single sign-on so you’ll access it with your UMW NetID – just using umw.edu at the end (mail.umw.edu will not work). Please note that you’ll complete an information form on your first visit to the site. This form can be completed as soon as you join the UMW campus community.
The Talley Center will have walk-in hours available for students throughout the day on Wednesday, Nov. 6, following the election, with counselors available for walk-in crisis appointments and other election-related concerns. Students are encouraged to call (x1053), but they can also walk in without an appointment. Students can also show up individually or with groups of friends to meet with a counselor as needed that day.
For additional activities on the Nov. 5 Day on Democracy and following election day, please see the Student Activities and Engagement Calendar of Events, including an SAE Tiny Desk Concert, Crafternoon, Secret Move Night, CPB Karaoke, and volunteer opportunities to extend civic and community engagement and check out the UMW fitness classes schedule for additional ways to stay active.
Thank you for voting and being an active citizen!
