UMW is pleased to announce that Lynn Lewis, professor and chair of biological sciences, has been appointed to the position of Director of the Sciences in the UMW College of Arts and Sciences. This appointment represents a major step forward in reorganization efforts.
After earning her PhD in microbiology from VA Tech, Lewis began teaching at Mary Washington in 1989 as an Assistant Professor when the science programs were housed in Combs Hall. In 1997, she helped plan the new Jepson Science Center and in 2002 was promoted to the rank of Professor. For six years, Lewis served as chair of the Department of Biological Sciences where she oversaw the addition and renovation of the Jepson Science Center in 2019.
Lewis has been active on numerous committees and working groups over the years and has garnered universal praise for her contributions. As a trained biologist who studies viruses, the UMW community especially appreciated her expertise during the pandemic. In 2023, Lewis was recognized with the BOV Faculty Leadership Award.
In her new role as Director, Lewis will oversee all the programs in the natural sciences and will assume the management of the Jepson Science Center, including all the physical spaces, equipment and materials. Chairs of our programs in the sciences will report to Lewis who will report to the Dean. She will officially start her new position in summer 2025.
Through Lewis’ focused leadership, UMW looks forward to further advancement of its science programs.
