Mathur Publishes on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night

Professor of English Maya Mathur has published an article titled “Fantasies of Assimilation: Multicultural Casting and Migrant Narratives in Tim Supple’s and Adam Smethurst’s Adaptations of Twelfth Night.” The article was included in The Sad and Merry Madness of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night edited by Louise Roszak and Nora Galland, University of Nanterre Press, 2026.

Mathur’s essay examines the use of multicultural casting in Tim Supple and Adam Smethurst’s televisual adaptations of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and argues that these casting practices highlight the position of immigrants in twenty-first century Britain. She posits that the directors use actors of color to portray the main characters as refugees and use their interracial marriages at the film’s conclusion to advocate for the integration of minorities into a multiethnic nation.
