Fairfax School Psychologist Returns to Alma Mater as Psychology Graduate in Residence
University of Mary Washingotn alumna Erin Burke Kauffman ’11 returned to her alma mater earlier this week as this year’s Distinguished Psychology Graduate in Residence.
Kauffman, who has worked for more than a decade as a school psychologist in Fairfax County – one of the country’s largest public school districts – spent Monday and Tuesday mornings visiting classes in Mercer Hall. She answered questions and discussed her career path with students in Exceptional Child taught by Virginia Mackintosh, and Learning and Motivation taught by Dave Stahlman.
Her professional portfolio focuses on psychoeducational and developmental assessment, MTSS implementation and behavioral intervention. She is committed to collaborative consultation across disciplines, and her UMW visit illustrates her emphasis on mentoring students as they prepare to enter the field.
Kauffman, who lives in Chantilly, Virginia, double majored in psychology and sociology at Mary Washington, graduating cum laude. She earned a Master of Education degree and a Nationally Certified School Psychologist credential – a terminal degree for practicing school psychologists – from the College of William and Mary. A member of the National Association of School Psychologists, she was nominated for a Special Education PTA award in 2019 and 2020.
