The following message, from the Office of Student Affairs, went to students earlier today. However, we realize many faculty and staff members have also been affected.
To the University Community:
This morning around 11 a.m., the fire alarm in the new University Center sounded, and the building was evacuated. This was the third alarm this week in the University Center, and we appreciate that students and other visitors to the Center safely evacuated the building and will continue to do so when fire alarms sound there or anywhere else on campus. (See UMW’s fire safety procedures here.)
As for the building’s evacuations, we realize that student dining was interrupted. Understanding that some students used Flex in lieu of meal “swipes” and others lost a meal “swipe” when they had to abandon their meals, we are working on a plan to compensate those individuals affected. The compensation plan may take a couple of weeks to implement, but our hope is that the fire/smoke alarm issues will be resolved as quickly as possible.
Thank you for your understanding and patience. If you have any questions or concerns, please direct them to sae@umw.edu or 540-654-1061.
