Dear Colleagues,
Paul Messplay, UMW’s Vice President for Administration and Finance and Chief Financial Officer, has announced his retirement effective January 20, 2023. Paul came to the University of Mary Washington in 2007 to lead the University’s budgeting, and has been VPAF/CFO for the last four years. I am deeply grateful for Paul’s service, his professionalism, and his role in ensuring that UMW’s financial position is stable and our facilities are maintained and improved. We will miss him greatly, but know that he will enjoy retirement.
I want the UMW community to know that I am launching a national search for the next individual to fill this significant leadership role. The Vice President for Administration and Finance and CFO is a key member of the president’s cabinet who is charged with overseeing critical functions that are essential to the University’s ongoing success. The VPAF/CFO advises the President, other cabinet members and the BOV (through the President) on financial affairs, supervises and coordinates the preparation of the University program budget for submission to the State Department of Planning and Budget and the preparation of the University’s capital outlay budget submissions. This position also oversees administration and management of six areas: Budget and Financial Analysis, Business Services, Procurement, Finance, Facilities Services, Human Resources. Chief of Staff Dr. Jeffrey McClurken will be chairing this search committee which will be working with the search firm of Academic Search, Inc. with the goal of having someone in place by January 2023.
I want to end by thanking Paul Messplay for his distinguished service to the University of Mary Washington, and we will all have a chance to do so both informally and formally before he leaves in January.
Best regards,
Troy
