Professor of Sociology Eric Bonds authored a commentary in the Virginia Mercury titled “Should a Virginia Jail Be Exempt From State Standards Just Because It Contracts With ICE?”

In the column, Bonds examines the history of the Caroline Detention Facility, located near Fredericksburg, and its role as one of Virginia’s two main Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities. He also raises questions about state oversight, noting that while other regional and local jails must comply with state standards, regulators appear to consider the Caroline facility exempt from those requirements.

Bonds, who teaches courses on human rights, climate change and environmental justice at UMW, writes in a personal capacity. The views expressed in the commentary are his own and do not necessarily reflect those of the University.
