Three prominent Civil War scholars will offer perspectives on the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation during “A Fireside Chat: Looking at the Emancipation Proclamation” at the University of Mary Washington on Friday, September 21. The event, organized by the Virginia Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Commission and hosted by UMW, will begin at 7 p.m. in George Washington Hall’s Dodd Auditorium. The Center, also known as BCM at UMW, is offering community wellness classes starting Wednesday, September 12 at 1514 College Ave.

Yoga/Wednesdays noon – 1:00 p.m.

Zumba/Thursdays 5 – 6 p.m.

Pilates/Fridays 3 – 4 p.m.

President Richard V. Hurley has announced the formation of a University-wide Provost Search Committee. President Hurley will chair the committee, which will begin work immediately. Members of the committee are:

Associate Professor of Political Science Ranjit Singh’s work has recently been published in “The Middle East: Its History and Culture,” edited by Jason Tatlock. The book includes Singh’s chapter, “Dictatorship and Democracy in the Contemporary Middle East.”

The University of Mary Washington will hold Family Weekend from Friday, Sept. 21 through Sunday, Sept. 23. The annual on-campus event invites friends and family members to visit UMW and get a taste of student life. It will include activities for students and their families as well as faculty and staff.

More than 40 events and activities are open for participants including a variety of academic open houses, faculty lectures, art exhibitions, activities for students and sporting events. Family Weekend hallmark events will include a cookout and club showcase, the education abroad fair and a tour of Brompton, home of UMW President Richard V. Hurley. Approximately 1,000 additional family members are expected to be on campus for the festivities. All faculty and staff are invited to participate.
