UMW welcomes the newest member of our Purchasing family Shannon Finley.  Shannon joins the Purchasing team as a Buyer Specialist, and had been functioning in that role for 5 years at George Mason University.  We wish her well in her new role at UMW.

What is Order Splitting ?

As a state agency, we follow the guidelines set in the Agency Procurement and Surplus Property Manual (APSPM) for the Commonwealth of Virginia which states:

Order Splitting Prohibition.  The placement of multiple orders within other than a reasonable time period to one or more vendors for the same, like, or related goods or services to avoid using the appropriate method of procurement or to remain within delegated purchasing authority is prohibited.

PARKING UPDATE – CONVERGENCE CENTER CONSTRUCTION

We have received several communications regarding the ITCC project and its impact on campus traffic patterns.

To reiterate what has been shared:

ITCC “early phase” of the construction project is underway (from roughly the end of March to the end of May), two parking spots behind the Library and four spots behind Pollard Hall will be lost.  Also, the handicapped spaces near Jepson Hall will be closed – this area is being enlarged from the current two handicapped spaces to a total of seven spaces.  These new spaces will be open after May 2012.  There might be a need to temporarily eliminate one space in the Jepson lot to facilitate some truck traffic while the temporary construction road is built.  (It is not entirely clear if this will be required at this point.)

Alan Levine, new instructional technology specialist in Teaching and Learning Technology, presented an online keynote for the Flat Classroom Project, an international collaborative project where middle and high school students explore issues of technology, culture, and society .

In We, Our Digital Selves, and Us, speaking as three different personas, Levine explores questions on how online versus offline identities are blurred and what it may mean for individuals to be proactive in managing their online presence.

The video was filmed and edited by Andy Rush and features student commentary from Martha Burtis’s Identity and Citizenship in a Digital Age class.

Hundreds of students, faculty, staff and community members came together last weekend on UMW’s Fredericksburg campus for Relay for Life, an annual event to raise awareness for cancer research, celebrate survivors and honor and remember those who fought cancer.

Despite wet weather, more than 400 people gathered in Great Hall on Saturday, April 21 for the opening ceremony. Many stayed throughout the night for the Survivor Lap, Luminaria Ceremony and various contests and activities.

According to The Bullet, UMW’s Relay for Life has raised more than $47,000.

Shawn Humphrey, associate professor of economics at the University of Mary Washington, has been invited to attend the upcoming Opportunity Collaboration, a strategic business retreat and networking summit as one of 300 global delegates.

Meeting annually for four days in conjunction with World Poverty Day, Opportunity Collaboration brings nonprofit leaders, for-profit social entrepreneurs, grant-makers and social investors together to “convene, connect and create” with leaders in similar fields, according to its website.  The summit focuses on economic justice and poverty elimination. Jonathan Lewis, CEO and entrepreneur, founded Opportunity Collaboration in 2009.

This year, the summit will be held from Sunday, October 14 through Friday, October19 in Ixtapa, Mexico.

University of Mary Washington students  Brendan Oudekerk, Meghan Hobbs and Sean Simons are among 18 college and university students selected for the summer 2012 College Leaders Program at the Sorensen Institute of Political Leadership.

Hobbs and Oudekerk are senior international affairs and political science and economics and political science majors, respectively, and Simons is a junior political science and political communication major.

The College Leaders Program (CLP) gives students the practical skills and political knowledge to become effective advocates in government and business. CLP curriculum is focused on energizing youth leaders, promoting civic engagement and preparing future leaders to be ethical and responsible citizens in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The four-week course is held over the summer on the University of Virginia grounds.

The Sorensen Institute was founded as the Virginia Institute of Political Leadership in 1993 in hopes it would identify and bring together Virginia’s emerging political leaders. More than 1,200 Virginian students have graduated from the Institute.
