On January 26, a friend in the community made a significant gift to establish a new scholarship for students in the UMW Philharmonic. Beginning in the fall of 2013, the new Mary Wynn Richmond McDaniel Philharmonic Scholarship will be awarded to a talented student musician to support his/her performance in the orchestra.

Originally from southwestern Virginia and an alumna of Westhampton College (part of the University of Richmond), Mary Wynn McDaniel says she always has been interested in music. “I played in bands and orchestras all through high school and college, and my children and grandchildren have pursued music as well,” she says. “I cannot imagine a world without music.”

Mary Wynn and her husband, Charles G. McDaniel, have been longtime supporters of the UMW orchestra program, and both served individual terms as chair of the orchestra board. Although they are not connected to the University as alumni or parents, Mary Wynn says they enjoy many campus activities.

“I so enjoy living in a ‘college town.’ We attend many of the programs on campus including plays, Great Lives lectures, and — of course — performances by the Philharmonic,” she says. “I believe music is a universal language, and I am thrilled to be able to support our student musicians here in Fredericksburg.”

Mindy Erchull, associate professor of psychology, was one of 40 faculty members who attended the Institute for Academic Feminist Psychologists in San Antonio, Texas, Jan. 26 and 27.

The Institute was sponsored by the Society for the Psychology of Women, Division 35 of the American Psychological Association.

While attending the Institute, she presented a poster entitled “Own and Others’ Desire for Marriage and Children: A Comparison of Feminist and Non-Feminist Women.” Miriam Liss, associate professor of psychology, and Lauren Hartwell ’11 served as co-authors of the poster.

Eric Gable, professor of anthropology, will present a lecture at Bucknell University on Wednesday, March 21 as part of the university’s spring lecture series, “Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson: An American Origin Story, Interdisciplinarily Considered.”

Gable’s lecture, “What Heritage Does and Does Not Do to Identity: The Case of Hemings and Jefferson,” will use material from his fieldwork in Indonesia, West Africa and Monticello, the historic home of Thomas Jefferson.

Former UMW men’s soccer coach Roy Gordon is among the inductees in the 2012 class in the Virginia-D.C. Soccer Hall of Fame. Gordon, along with four others, will be inducted at ceremonies on Friday, Feb. 3.

An eight-time Capital Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, Gordon was selected as National Soccer Coaches Association of America Regional Coach of the Year five times, and as Virginia State College Division Coach of the Year on four occasions. He was named the CAC’s Co-Coach of the Year in 2009.

Gordon retired at the end of the spring 2011 semester after 34 years at Mary Washington.
