As you know, we are moving to WordPress and the new UMW Web site will launch on October 7. Most URLs of department sites are changing, and we don’t want you to worry. Please note that we will provide automatic redirects as follows:

• Current department home pages
• URLs published in EagleEssentials, the Academic Catalogs, and the Dictionary of Academic Regulations

In addition, we are working with the Design Services office to make sure that any publications coming across the transom will use the new URLs. The above steps will cover you for the year until you need some reprints.

If you have any “deep-linked” urls (sub-pages other than those other than the links mentioned above) that are on current print materials with a long shelf life, please notify the Web Communications office (webmaster at umw.edu) to let us know so we can create a redirect for you.

The annual James Monroe Lecture is coming up on Monday, October 3 at 7 p.m. in the Great Hall! This year’s speaker is Susan Kern, professor at the College of William and Mary, and author of the important new book The Jeffersons at Shadwell. Merging archaeology, material culture, and social history, Kern’s talk will reconstruct the fascinating story of Shadwell, the birthplace of Thomas Jefferson. Located in present-day Albemarle County, Shadwell was at the time considered “the frontier.” The Jeffersons’ role in settling Virginia provides a new perspective on Thomas Jefferson and on others – including James Monroe – who extended social and political power across Virginia as they moved west.

The free talk will be followed by a book signing and dessert reception. The annual JM Lecture is sponsored by the Board, Friends and staffs of the following UMW departments: James Monroe Museum; Center for Historic Preservation; Department of Historic Preservation; Department of History and American Studies. The UMW Jazz Ensemble is providing live entertainment for the Starlight Social on Thursday, September 29. The social, which benefits the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, will be held from 7 – 9 p.m. at the Spotsylvania Town Centre on the Village Green near Bravo. The event will feature complimentary hors d’oeuvres from Bravo! Cucina Italiana, Firebirds Wood Fired Grill, Splitsville and The Greene Turtle. Denim-n-Lace, a country rock band, also will provide live entertainment. Wine from Potomac Point Winery will be available for purchase.

Indeed, community service plays an integral role in campus life at Mary Washington, and in my life and my presidency. That’s why I chose "Engaging Minds, Serving the World" as the theme for inauguration week.

In celebration of Inauguration Week, President Richard V. Hurley wrote an op-ed that recently appeared in The Free Lance-Star. In the article, Hurley discusses the integral part that service plays to the campus community as well as the events leading up to his inauguration ceremony.
