Reception to Honor Dr. Ed Hegmann
The following message is from the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs:
Dr. Ed Hegmann is retiring at the end of this academic year after a long and distinguished career at UMW. Please join us on Tuesday, April 3, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Anderson Center as we honor his achievements, thank him for his service, and wish him all the best for the future.
Dr. Ed Hegmann and Athletics at Mary Washington …
Dr. Hegmann joined the faculty in 1976 and was basically a one-person show as athletics director, head of intramural sports, and chair of the health and physical education department. During his 23 seasons as women’s tennis coach he won three national titles, and in 2010 was inducted into the ITA Women’s Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame.
Over the span of his UMW years, Dr. Hegmann built the athletics program from six teams to 23 and saw tremendous improvement in facilities for athletes, including the Battleground Athletic Complex, Indoor Tennis Center, the Dickinson Baseball Stadium, and the Fitness Center. His most recent project was development and construction of the Anderson Center and being a proud witness to the Center’s dedication and first season of use.
We are grateful for the leadership Ed has provided to athletics and the institution over the span of his career, and we look forward to the community’s participation in this special occasion to honor him on April 3.

Important Notice to the UMW Community
The following message is from the Office of Student Affairs:
Important Notice to the UMW Community On Monday, March 19 at 10:14 p.m., UMW Police were notified of an incident in Eagle Landing involving a student in possession of a handgun. Campus police responded to the scene immediately, addressed the student, and quickly determined that no ammunition was present and confiscated the gun. The University Police assessment indicated the incident posed no ongoing threat to Eagle Landing or the University community, therefore a UMW alert was not issued. The student has been placed on interim suspension, pending an administrative hearing. While the situation did not necessitate a campus alert, the University considers any incident involving a gun to be a serious matter. According to UMW’s Code of Conduct, no student may keep, use, possess, display, or carry any lethal or dangerous devices. An investigation is continuing.
