Caffrey Talks Post-COVID Workplace Culture on NPR

Senior Associate Registrar Kevin Caffrey was a guest on WOSU’s All Sides and spoke with host Matthew Rand of 89.7 NPR News about workplace culture and returning to the office post-COVID. The piece was titled “Will working full-time in an office become the norm again for the majority of the workforce?” Topics included the importance of employers valuing physical as well as psychological safety at work as well as the importance of cultivating a positive workplace culture that prioritizes empathetic communication and leadership. Caffrey explained that post COVID-19, “Organizations really need to assess and reflect on their workplace culture. Is it a place that their employees are going to want to return to and feel physically and psychologically safe?” Listen to the program.
Campus Walk Pedestrian Detour at GW Hall
The following message is from Facilities Services:
The Underground Utilities Project is entering a critical phase where excavation for waterlines and steam work will require excavations across Campus Walk and necessitate pedestrian detours.
A section of Campus Walk will be closed in front of George Washington Hall beginning Monday, July 3. Work in this area will continue through the end of July to replace steam lines and waterlines. The accessible path around the construction zone next week will be the green path in Figure 1, which uses the walkway adjacent to Campus Walk that goes toward Mason and Randolph halls.

Starting July 10th the accessible path will be extended to the green path outlined in Figure 2, which loops closer to Mason and Randolph halls.

EagleVision Now Powered by Zoom
EagleVision digital screens are now powered by Zoom. UMW has switched digital signage providers to utilize an existing platform, with content management provided by University Communications and support through Information Technologies. The transition will happen between July 1 and Aug. 1, and you may see some screens blank during this time as the new hardware is installed.
To submit your content for EagleVision screens, which include locations in academic buildings, residence halls and athletics spaces, please complete the UMW EagleVision Digital Signage Form at least two weeks in advance of when you want the content to run. Contact communications@umw.edu with any questions.
A few quick tips:
– JPEG images are preferred and need to be sized to 1920 x 1080 landscape.
– Videos are also an option but will play without sound, so they must include closed captioning.
– Content will be reviewed for clarity and style and may also be considered for additional communication channels, including social media and campus newsletters (such as EagleEye!).
Russell Elected VEDC Communication Chair
Center for Teaching Director and Associate Professor of Education Victoria Russell
Center for Teaching Director Victoria Russell has been elected Communications Chair in the Virginia Educational Development Collaborative (VEDC). The VEDC is a consortium of faculty developers in Virginia who meet regularly to share and promote best practices in college teaching. The consortium was an initiative created through the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV). Russell will serve a three-year term on the Executive Council with officers from institutions across Virginia.
Russell also was recently selected for the 2023-2024 Senior Leadership Seminar for the Virginia Network of the American Council on Education’s Women’s Network. Initiated in 1987, the Senior Leadership Seminar provides a forum to bring together emerging women leaders with established leaders in higher education in the Commonwealth. The Senior Leadership seminar focuses on three core areas: personal development, professional development, and trends in higher education. During meetings throughout the year, speakers and guests join the group to discuss critical issues facing higher education from a variety of perspectives.

Williams’ Civil Rights Work Lauded in ‘The Free Lance-Star’

James Farmer Multicultural Center Assistant Director Chris Williams’ behind-the-scenes work with the City of Fredericksburg’s Victoria Matthews was lauded in an article titled “Fredericksburg unveils historic marker honoring John Washington,” which ran recently in The Free Lance-Star. “In February, the city and the University of Mary Washington introduced a Civil Rights Trail that has been years in the making,” the article says. Williams and Matthews have been the driving force behind the initiatives. Read more.

Cooperman Pens Article on Women in Virginia Politics

Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Department of Political Science and International Affairs Rosalyn Cooperman penned an article titled “The Fight for Partisan Control of Virginia’s State Legislature Continues and Democratic Women are on the Front Line” for the Center for American Women in Politics/Rutgers. The article pointed to three main takeaways of how gender is playing a significant role on the campaign trail in Virginia for the House of Delegates and state Senate. Read the article.

She has been married to her husband, Marty, for 40 years. They have 3 adult children, 1 teenager and 6 grandchildren. Linda is passionate about helping Veterans in need. Her husband served in the Marine Corps for 20 years and is a disabled Veteran. She is the Commander of the Disabled American Veterans, Unit 7 in Fredericksburg, Vice President of the Marine Corps League and past Vice Commander of the VFW Auxiliary.
Linda is a certified Senior Move Manager with the National Association of Senior Move Managers as well as a Relocation Transition Specialist. She is a member of the Institute for Chronic Disorganization and received additional education working with those who struggle with hoarding and ADHD. She is the co-founder of Downsizing VA, a start to finish downsizing company who assists families transition from their family home into the next level of care such as assisted living.
Her passion is working with Seniors and their families to help them cut through the decades of “stuff” in their home and assisting them to make decisions to keep them safe as they age. As well as providing them with the resources needed to make the right decision for their individual needs.
