Kuykendall Returns to Oxford to Present at “London Stage” Conference

Brooks Kuykendall, chair of the UMW Department of Music, returned to New College, Oxford for the second iteration of The London Stage and the Nineteenth-Century World conference, April 5-7, 2018.  As at the first conference in 2016, he was invited for a panel focusing on the works of Gilbert & Sullivan, convened by Dr. Benedict Taylor (University of Edinburgh).  This year Kuykendall presented the paper “Sullivan’s cosmopolitan dramaturgical ideal.”

Most of Kuykendall’s research has centered around British music in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, extending beyond Gilbert & Sullivan to the music of Elgar, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Walton, and Britten, among others.

Farnsworth Delivers Research Paper

Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the University’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, recently delivered a research paper entitled, “Partisan Trends in Late Night Humor” at the Annual Meeting of the Virginia Association of Communication Arts and Sciences.

COAR’s Spring Forward Festival on Sunday

The event will be held on the lawn of Brompton this Sunday, April 8, from 1-4 p.m. Community members are invited to bring their children for an afternoon of crafts, games and egg hunts. Faculty Regalia Rental

Oak Hall is the regalia provider for the University of Mary Washington. Faculty and Staff may rent or purchase academic regalia from the leading custom regalia manufacturer in the country. Beginning February 1, 2018, Faculty and Staff may go online at Umwfaculty.shopoakhalli.com to rent regalia for delivery directly to individual offices. Those who prefer to order by phone may do so by calling Oak Hall Customer Service at l-800-456-7623. A customer service representative will be happy to assist you.

Bachelor Ensemble:  $37.95
Master Ensemble:  $39.55
Doctoral Ensemble:  $43.95
Prices include shipping charges.

To ensure timely delivery, orders for rental regalia must be received by Oak Hall no later than April 27, 2018.

Custom academic regalia is available through Oak Hall’s Custom Department. Please call 1-800-223-0429 for assistance with custom orders.

Elizabeth Freund Larus Offers Guest Lecture in Taipei on US-Taiwan Relations

Elizabeth Freund Larus, Waple Professor of Political Science and International Affairs, offered a guest lecture “US-Taiwan Relations under President Trump: Continuity and Change,” March 7, 2018 at Tamkang University in Taiwan. Preceding the talk, Dr. Larus exchanged views on Washington-Taipei relations with several scholars and former government officials.

Volunteers Needed for Multicultural Fair – The James Farmer Multicultural Center is seeking volunteers for the 28th Annual Multicultural Fair taking place on Saturday, April 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students, faculty and staff can contribute in a multitude of ways by helping with set-up/take-down, serving as an MC for stage performances, helping to hand out programs, and helping to keep our campus clean during the Fair. Volunteers get a free Multicultural Fair t-shirt.
