Hanna and Student Publish Historical Markers Study
Stephen Hanna, chair and professor of Geography, and Fariss Hodder ’14 co-wrote an article based on a Fredericksburg historical markers study completed while Hodder was a student. The article, “Reading the signs: using a qualitative Geographic Information System to examine the commemoration of slavery and emancipation on historical markers in Fredericksburg, Virginia” is now available in “cultural geographies,” an international journal of peer-reviewed scholarly research.
Hanna and Hodder also co-authored a chapter for “Social Memory and Heritage Tourism Methodologies,” a methodology book that will be published by Routledge in February 2015.
Farnsworth Co-Authors Research Paper
Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the University’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, is co-author of a research paper, “News Coverage of U.S. Presidential Campaigns: Reporting on Primaries and General Elections, 1988-2012,” which was presented at the American Political Science Association Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., last month.

Farnsworth Recognized by APSA
Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the University’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, was recognized at the recent Annual Meeting of the American Political Science Association for completing two years as chair of the association’s Political Communication section. The section, one of the larger ones in APSA, includes roughly 400 political science professors and graduate students from around the world who study the intersection of media and politics. Farnsworth previously served two years as vice chair of the section and six years as a member of the section’s executive council. He is the author or co-author of five books on media and politics.
Traffic Closure on Sunken Road

As part of the University’s Stormwater Improvement Project, the improved storm line behind Marshall Hall will need to be connected to the City of Fredericksburg’s storm line under Sunken Road. This will entail digging up Sunken Road just west of William Street, behind Marshall Hall. University and community traffic will be diverted through the College Terrace neighborhood, as indicated in the attached Traffic Plan. The work will begin Monday, September 8, and should be completed by close of business Wednesday, September 10.
This project is environmentally strategic for UMW, the City of Fredericksburg, the Rappahannock River and the Chesapeake Bay. Thank you for your patience and support.

Fire Safety News
September is Campus Fire Safety Month for the commonwealth of Virginia. The UMW Office of Emergency Management and Safety will participate in this month long awareness campaign with events to educate the community about fire safety.
“It is important that we continue the fire safety education that begins in primary and secondary school systems and we continue to make more fire safe adults,” said Briant K. Atkins, campus fire safety officer. “Primary causes of fires on college campuses according to The United States Fire Administration are cooking, smoking and arson.”

Mindfulness Week Returns to UMW
Lilian Cheung, director of health promotion and communication in the Department of Nutrition at Harvard University, will be the featured speaker for the University of Mary Washington’s second annual Mindfulness Week that begins Monday, Sept. 15. Co-author of “Savor: Mindful Eating, Mindful Life,” Cheung will discuss mindful eating on Wednesday, September 17, at 7 p.m. in Lee Hall, Room 411. The talk is free and open to the public.
In addition to serving as a lecturer for the Harvard School of Public Health’s Department of Nutrition, Cheung is the editorial director of The Nutrition Source, a nutrition website for health professionals, media and consumers; co-editorial director of the Obesity Prevention Source, a website providing science-based information for policy changes at the community level, and the Asian Diabetes Prevention Initiative, a website providing research-based evidence for policy makers and the public with the goal of reversing the spread of Type 2 diabetes in Asia. Cheung will be available after her talk to sign copies of her book.
