UMW Announces Recipient of Citizenship and Diversity Award
Cara Wimberley of Blacksburg, Virginia, has been named the 2014-2015 recipient of the University of Mary Washington’s Citizenship Award for Diversity Leadership.
The annual award is given to a rising senior enrolled as a full-time student in an undergraduate degree program at UMW. The student must maintain high academic standards, possess characteristics of leadership and make a personal commitment to advocating an appreciation for diversity and inclusion on campus.
As the award recipient, Wimberley will serve as an active spokesperson for diversity inclusion, a peer mentor to students and a voice for underrepresented populations.
“Cara recently spent a semester abroad at Al-Ahliyya Amman University in Jordan studying Arabic and taking other courses about Middle Eastern culture and history,” said Marion Sanford, director of multicultural affairs. “The experience opened her eyes to many global, social and political issues and further enhanced her leadership skills, as well as increased her understanding of different cultural environments.”
During her UMW career, the psychology major and linguistics and Middle Eastern studies minor served as secretary and vice president of People for the Rights of Individuals of Sexual Minorities (PRISM) and participated in the Cross-Cultural BBQ, Arab Culture Night, Day of Silence and Multicultural Fair. Wimberley will be a peer mentor in the InterLink Mentor Program with the Center for International Education this year.
“Her studies at UMW and abroad have encouraged her to work toward causes that promote diversity, equality, social justice and cultural awareness,” Sanford said. “Cara’s UMW and study abroad experiences have taught her that being a leader means learning about diverse identities and cultures in order to best understand the richness of community.”
Wimberley plans to use the Citizenship Award for Diversity Leadership as an opportunity to address social justice and diversity issues that impact members of the UMW community and beyond. She aspires to continue these efforts after graduating.
Davidson Publishes in Cahiers de la Méditerranée
The Cahiers de la Méditerranée, the peer-reviewed journal of the Université de Nice, recently published “Italy, British resolve and the 1935-36 Italo-Ethiopian War” by Jason W. Davidson, associate professor of Political Science and International Affairs.
Banner Action Planning Engagement

As you know, Ellucian’s Banner application is an important component of UMW’s portfolio of technology tools. UMW has been using Banner since 2004, and many departments depend on it to run critical operational processes.
In an effort to ensure UMW is using Banner as efficiently and effectively as possible, we have asked Ellucian to conduct what they call an Action Planning engagement. The Action Planning engagement involves capturing feedback from faculty, staff, and students who use Banner, and then analyzing the feedback to create an action plan for improvements and enhancement to the Banner system going forward. This engagement is available to UMW at no cost under its existing contract with Ellucian.

Communication Journal Honors UMW Political Science Professor
Chad Murphy, assistant professor of Political Science at the University of Mary Washington, was recently announced as the recipient of article of the year for 2014 by Communication Methods and Measures journal.

Murphy, along with Associate Professor of Psychology Chris Westbury at the University of Alberta, published “Expanding the scope of selective exposure: An objective approach to measurement of media ideology” in August 2013.
“The paper does an excellent job describing the methodological limitations of current approaches to selective exposure (i.e., blunt coding, assumption of neutrality, artificial unidimensionality),” said members of the committee who selected the winners. “Further, the cognitive psychology focus on word co-occurrence is interesting and innovative to selective exposure research.”
The winning paper was selected in a two-step process. Editors of the Communication Methods and Measures journal narrowed down the list of articles before members of an executive board serving on a special committee identified the winners.
Murphy and Westbury will be awarded during an annual conference in Montreal, Canada.
Richardson Addresses Southern Business Administration Association
Lynne Richardson, dean of the College of Business, gave a plenary address at the Southern Business Administration Association summer meeting on July 14 in Clearwater, Florida. Her invited talk was “Checking our Own Development with Lessons from the Aspiring Deans Seminar.”
English Alum Nominated for Emmy
UMW Alumnus Alexander Cardia ’07 is among the nominees for the 35th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards announced by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Cardia is nominated in the category of Outstanding Graphic Design & Art Direction, he was nominated for his animation and design work on Superheroes: A Never-Ending Battle, produced by PBS. Cinema on the Circle, July 21 and 28
The 2nd Annual Cinema on the Circle event began this week! Hosted by the University of Mary Washington, The Center for Faith and Leadership and Fredericksburg Parks and Recreation, this FREE movie series is open to the Fredericksburg community!
The movie will begin at dusk (when it’s dark enough to see the screen). The movies will be projected onto an enormous blow up screen located on Ball Circle. Parking will be available in the lot behind George Washington Hall (Building #26 on the map)
Be sure to bring your lawn chairs and picnic blankets! We will be providing FREE popcorn and snow cones. You are welcome to bring any non-alcoholic beverages in coolers to enjoy during the movie.
Brewer Stars in Capital Fringe Festival Play
Cate Brewer, lecturer in the Department of Theatre and Dance, is spending her summer starring in Isis and Vesco Investigate the Curious Death of Dr. Freud.
