Allyson M. Poska, professor of history and program chair of women’s and gender studies, will give a presentation for the annual Lansdowne Lectures at the University of Victoria on Thursday, Jan. 30. The lecture, History, the Humanities, and the Promise of Possibilities, discusses the humanities as the foundation of intellectual innovation.

Governor’s Eight Hours of Leave
The Governor recently announced an additional 8 hours of leave for Monday, Dec. 23. Because the University is already closed Monday, Dec. 23 thru Friday Jan. 3, 2014, President Hurley will schedule the use of the additional eight hours of leave during the upcoming calendar year. The current winter holiday break remains the same.
Please enjoy your holiday and look to receive an updated 2013-2014 UMW holiday calendar when the date for the additional eight hours of leave has been determined.
Doug Noble Named Excellent Eagle
Congratulations to Doug Noble, director of Dodd Auditorium, who has been selected as the Excellent Eagle Employee for the month of December. A parking spot of his choosing has been reserved for him through the end of the month.

Caffrey Featured in Songwriters’ Showcase
Senior Associate Registrar Kevin Caffrey will be featured as part of the Fredericksburg Songwriters’ Showcase at the Picker’s Supply Concert Hall on Friday, Jan. 31 at 8p.m. In its 2oth year, The Fredericksburg Songwriters’ Showcase is a monthly concert series featuring original acoustic music. Caffrey has been writing and recording original music for over 20 years; his most recent CD, “Medium Talent,” came out in March 2013. Admission is $10; $5 for children and students.
Farnworth Lectures on Campaign
Stephen Farnsworth, professor of political science and director of the University’s Center for Leadership and Media Studies, gave a lecture entitled “Reviewing the 2013 Campaign for Governor of Virginia,” at the Virginia Association of Counties Annual Meeting at the Homestead in Hot Springs, Va. In addition, Farnsworth was part of a panel of academics, journalists and lobbyists examining the results of the 2013 Virginia Elections and previewing the Commonwealth’s political agenda for 2014 at the Virginia Business Journal Forum in Richmond.
